NEWS   FOR   YOUNG   ATHLETES

Sandy 10 and 2 Mile Fun Run - 6 April

We are expecting between 200 and 250 runners to have pre-registered for the 10 Mile race, and up to 150 entries on the day.   All finishers in the 10 Mile event will receive a commemorative Tee-Shirt , this being the 20th running of the event.   Paul Tomlin, who organised the race for many of the early years, has kindly agreed to start the race as well as run in it.   The Mayor and Mayoress of Sandy (Richard and Jacqui Frood) will preside over the Fun Run and welcome all runners home in the 10 Mile event.

With just one week to go, we would still welcome any member of the club who has not already volunteered, to help marshal the event.   If you can help, please contact Nigel or Stuart.   Race Headquarters are at Sandy Upper School in Engayne Avenue Sandy, and the races get underway at 10:00am.

Club Party with our German Visitors - Sat 5 April
This year we have 10 runners and supporters from Erlensee in Germany coming over to run in the Sandy 10 and 2 Mile Fun Run.   As part of their itinerary we are holding a Club Cheese and Wine and Beer Party in Everton Village Hall on Saturday 5th April, at 8pm.   Entry to this event is £3 per head, which covers all food and drink for the evening.   This is an opportunity to have a good time, meet our German visitors and find out more about running events in Germany.   Please let Stuart or Nigel know if you are coming.

Le Touquet weekend 4th-6th July

All 15 people who have put their names down for our "club trip" to Le Touquet for the 10 and 20km races, will be contacted by the end of April for a deposit, and to decide on accommodation requirements.

Members

Welcome to the following new members who have recently joined the Club as Juniors: Roscoe Pibworth who lives in Potton, and Samuel Stock who lives in Sandy.   Best of luck in your athletics, fellas!

Meanwhile, Jackie Tutt, who has been a marvellous member of the club for over two years, is leaving the area to live in Norfolk and Australia(?)   Jackie has been a valuable runner (especially for our Ladies Cross Country team) and a fantastic social member (eg two extended Fairy Runs without falling over).   She will be sadly missed.   Good Luck Jackie and don't forget to look us up whenever you are in the area.

Looking after yourself

Run on the trails - smooth dirt trails are easy on the legs and great for the mind.   There is also less chance of running into hazards or turning an ankle on dirt than on grass.   Nothing's better than running on a great trail through a forest or along a scenic river or lakefront: the pounding's minimal, the mind wanders and the miles flow by.   So if you have chosen such a spot for your holidays, don't forget to take the running shoes!!   Mind you we have some decent trails in Bedfordshire!

  • Eastern Young Athletes' League dates for 2003
The first fixture is at HOME (well, Bedford actually but we are the host club and we need to supply officials and helpers) on Sunday April 27th.   Ken and David will be badgering parents and club members to help.   Please help them by volunteering first!

The competition is open to all juniors between 11 and 17 years old (on August 31st 2003).   But you must be a paid up club member (£5 pa) and wear club kit (available from Sporstscene in Biggleswade).   We need as many as possible.   We still have never managed a full team, we would probably win if we did.

Other venues have yet to be arranged but keep these dates free:
        Apr 27 (Bedford)   -   May 25   -   June 22   -   July 27
