Many thanks to those of you who turned up to the Club's AGM - we were delighted to see you.  A total of 19 people attended.  The retiring committee was re-elected apart from Kevin Ambrose who decided to step down from his role as Vice-Chairman - we thank Kevin for his past help and support.  Ken Prior was elected to take over the role of Vice-Chairman.  The Chairman was also pleased to welcome Tanya Tatchley to the Committee - Tanya was proposed and elected at the meeting.  The committee now consists of:

Sandy 10 Mile Race and 2 Mile Fun Run
    Sunday 3rd April

By the time you read this Newsletter, the Sandy 10 will (probably) be over for 2005.  We are very grateful for the many offers of support we have received from members, which means that we will be able to provide a safe and well organised race.  Entry numbers are significantly higher than last year, and we expect to have a record field in this the 22nd running of the event.

International Ultra runner, Danielle Sanderson, has entered again this year, which suggests that the lady's course record of 60 minutes is likely to be broken.  Bedford Harriers are using the event as their 10 Mile Club Championship, and with over 40 Harriers competing, they will almost certainly win the Erlensee Cup.

    Club Membership

We currently have a total of 81 paid-up members for 2005.  Quite a few people have not re-joined although we hope to attract some of our younger ex-members back now that the track season is here again.

County Squad Training Day 12 Feb

Over 50% of the attendees at this training day were from Biggleswade Athletic Club, including Sophie Dyer who sent us this report

On Saturday 12th Feb I went to the Bunyan Centre in Bedford and took part in the County Squad training day sponsored by Beds Active Sports.  I found the session quite hard but it was good.  I learnt a lot, with different stretches, and new warm ups.  Most of the day's activities concentrated on fitness and physical work, there was a little theory.  One of the coaches was Paul Evans who competed in the Olympics 3 times the last was at Salt Lake City in 1996.  Paul has also competed in the London Marathon.

The main coach was Stanley Madri, and he was supported by David Brown, Nigel Le Seur and Greg Simmons.  Stan told each of us how we could improve which was very helpful.  The complete session was very tiring but enjoyable, and I can't wait for the next one.

The next session is being arranged for 1st May at Luton's Stockwood Park

Schools Relays, Rowney Warren, March 9th.

The Club again organised this very popular event and was fortunate to narrowly avoid the snow that had been around just a few days earlier. The event was a huge success thanks to the efforts on many Club members.

Overseas Tour to the French Pyrenees
    20th to 23rd May

Eleven club members are signed up for the Club Overseas tour to a "training camp" in Font Romeu, high up in the French Pyrenees.  Details for our base in Font Romeu can be found at www.clos-st-savin.com We are leaving on Friday 20th May from Stansted Airport (13:30 flight), spending 3 nights at Le Clos St Savin, and return home to Stansted on Monday 23rd May (17:50 landing).

Our accommodation is a large Chalet that will sleep up to 20 people, so if any other club members would like to join the trip, it is not too late, and they would be more than welcome.  But please do not leave it too late, so as to ensure flight tickets to/from Perpignan.  Please contact Nigel (01767 682251) if you are interested or require any more details.

From the editors note in Athletics Weekly March 2nd:
The closest race of the meeting, if not the season was the women's event.  Biggleswade's Karen Worrall had taken up the running from Emma Grant of Hillingdon and reigning champion Vanessa Parry halfway through the first of two and opened up a gap of 50m at the halfway stage.  However, Parry's renowned strength saw her working hard on the last lap to shake of Grant and, in doing so, the pair closed rapidly on the tiring Worrall in the mainly downhill last quarter of the race.

Hillingdon's Grant, returning from a recent injury, managed to close right up on Worrall as they entered the finishing field for the last 300 m. As a more useful 400.800 m track runner, Grant was expected to kick away for victory, but Worrall proved dogged in her pursuit of the title.  Eventually, literally 10m from the line, Grant edged ahead to a narrowly lift her first ever cross country title and provide a welcome fillip for her forthcoming track campaign.

Karen Worall came 2nd with a time of 26.37 mins to Emma Grant's 1st in 23.36 mins
