There are still about 35 senior members from last year who have not re-joined the club.  We do not want to lose you but unless payment is received within the next four weeks your names will be taken off the club membership database.

On a very positive note, however, we do now have 70 Senior members of our Club - an all time record for this time of year.

We also welcome to three new junior members during March:
Adam Murphy    who lives in Beeston
Beccy White    who lives in Sandy
Bruce Harrison    a 2nd Claim member who lives in Royston

We wish you the very best of luck in all your athletic endeavours

Club Treasurer

Our Club Treasurer, Martyn Cole, is moving to a new job in France in June.  We wish Martyn all the best in his new job and thank him for all his hard work as club treasurer since taking over the role from Chris Clarke in early 2007.

We are therefore looking for a NEW CLUB TREASURER, to start between April and June this year.  If you feel that you have the time and credentials to fill this role, please contact Nigel (01767 682251) or Stuart (01767 223942) for an informal chat.

New Club Statistician

Our thanks go to David Brown who has undertaken the task of Club Statistician for many years.  However, he has decided to step down from the post and we are very pleased to announce that Robin Wynde has volunteered to take on the role.  Robin only joined us in January 2007 but since then has become a very valued club member.  Many thanks, Robin!

Sandy 10 Mile Road Race and Fun Run

This year's 25th Anniversary Sandy 10 was without doubt the best yet.  So a huge thank you to everyone who helped with the event.  Your support, enthusiasm and professionalism were fantastic, and the "funny hats" worn by the marshals was the icing on the cake.  The men's race was won by a man who has come 3rd and 2nd in previous Sandy 10 races, so his persistence, now as a Vet 40 runner, is an example to everyone to keep on trying.

Eight runners finished inside the magic 60 minute barrier, but at the same time there were countless runners of all abilities who thoroughly enjoyed the event and the enthusiastic support of the marshals.  This is what has made it such a popular race amongst all runners.

Our web site has full results of the 10 mile race and 3km fun run, and they will also be published in the Biggleswade Chronicle (4th April edition).  And don't forget that every helper and marshal can claim their Goody Bag and tee-shirt, so please contact Nigel at Tues/Thurs training nights or call 01767 682251.

Icknield Way Run - 24-26 May

Plans are coming together for this.  Starting on Sat 24th May (about 8 am), finishing that afternoon at Baldock railway station.  Re-start 8 am Sunday (at Baldock obviously) and finishing that afternoon at Balsham (two pubs !).  Zoe and Pat have agreed to make room in the garden/floor for tired runners and Pat is already polishing the barbeque.  Restart next morning to finish at Thetford railway station.

We already have one offer of help to top-up drinks etc on route.  Any other offers gratefully received.  Of course anybody who wants to run part of the route can join at any time.  Just don't expect us to keep up with you !

Technical coaching - a report

Some technical coaching was recently provided by the county, which some of our athletes attended.  Senior athlete Angela King sent this report:

The day was sunny but chilly.  We were shown out to the track and divided into our training groups.  I went with the shotputters - Hazel and Beth from BAC, and a couple of young men from Bedford.

Andy [a UK GB squad coach for shot] gave a short talk about the aims of his coaching methods, and the similarities between the throwing styles.  He also explained the importance of fitness, followed by a warm-up.

The training started with Andy asking us to throw a shot our normal method.  The session continued with adjustments and refinements to our throws.  Andy was encouraging and supportive throughout - the girls really improved their throws.

I found the session very helpful and, more importantly, Fun! It would have been nicer to see more seniors there (I did feel a bit old next to all the teenagers), but then again I got to have a lot of coaching from a first-class teacher.  I would love to see these posted as regular sessions - to see how much effort everyone puts in to improve themselves is amazing.

Now I'm looking forward to our session at Sandy on the 15th March - maybe I'll get better and show those kids a thing or two!
