NEWS   FOR   YOUNG   ATHLETES

Eastern Young Athlete's League, Bedford, 18 Aug

Besides being an event for our young athletes, this is a home fixture so all the support for raking, scoring, time keeping, judging from parents/members would be gratefully appreciated.

AAA Junior Champs, Birmingham, 11/12 Aug

We have 3 young athletes at these championships - Rachel Baust (U17 300m), Lauren Ambrose (U15 High Jump and 75m Hurdles), and Adam Dilley (U15 100m).   For further information speak to Ken Prior or David Brown.

AAA Coaching Workshop for Future Talent

Rachel Baust, Lauren Ambrose and Paul Arkwright were invited to this workshop.   Here is Rachel's account of the day:

On the 23rd June Lauren and I travelled to the University of East Anglia Campus at Norwich for an Active Sports Talent Camp coaching day.   Registration was 9 15 am for a 10am start.   There were over 100 athletes their and we soon made new friends as well as meeting old aquaintainces.   Lauren and I were both in the sprint group, the first session was over an hour which was mainly warming up, before moving onto drills and sprinting style. The focus was on:
  • Run on your toes
  • Run straight with hips high
  • Run relaxed with shoulders down and a steady arm action

The next session was on health and nutrition taken by Bruce Longden (Sally Gunnel's coach).   The emphasis was on eating a balanced diet, balancing exercise with sufficient rest and recovery.   Next was lunch, on the menu were items discussed in the lecture by Bruce.   After swapping various items, everybody found something to eat!

After lunch was another lecture, I missed this because I was lucky to be one of 7 to be randomly selected to take part in a recording for BBC Look East .   The filming took a half hour, the showing was 30 seconds, of which they seemed to like my back - not my best feature.

When returning back to the sessions the next efforts were on reaction starts and co-ordination.   Lauren had by this time moved to the hurdles group.   The day finished with a jubilee challenge comprising thowing and jumping events.   The day was very enjoyable, and really good experience, plus getting on TV was a definite bonus (if only my back).

Rounders Match and Barbeque - Tues 20 Aug

End of season barbeque preceded by a Juniors v Seniors rounders match, which the Seniors will win (there was some mention of ankle weights for the Drinkwaters !)   Put the date in your diary now.

    London Marathon

Next year's London Marathon is on Sunday 13th April 2003 so start training now (see "Looking After Yourself").   An early request, we know, but don't forget to let us know if your entry to the London Marathon is rejected and you wish to be considered for a Club place.   We are usually lucky enough to receive two guaranteed places.

    Looking after yourself...

    Nutrition - Vegetables/Fruit and Salad
Try scheduling a weekly trip to a local farmer's or roadside vegetable/fruit stall - there are quite a few around our area.   The fresher the veg or fruit the better.   Variety is also a good thing - the more colours in your basket, the more antioxidants you take in.   Try one new vegetable every week, and consume at least four servings of vegetables daily.   Look for plump, well-hydrated vegetables, avoid wilted lettuce and veggies with punctured skin.

Most greens provide about 2 to 5 grams of fibre per serving, with a good mix of cholesterol-lowering soluble fibre and digestion-aiding insoluble fibre.   Water-soluble fibre also helps reduce appetite.   Toss up a mixed green salad topped with kidney beans (also a good sources of soluble fibre) for an evening meal that should keep late-night hunger away.

    Training and Rest
Don't forget, increase training distances very gradually and always schedule in a rest day (or more) each week.   The body must be given time to rebuild itself - sleep and nutrition are also important in this respect.   As part of her marathon training, Paula Radcliffe sleeps twelve hours each night and tries to fit in a two hour nap in the afternoons.   Maybe we need not go to those extremes but a couple of early nights each week would be a good thing.
