    Sandy Library Display

For the first two weeks in August the Club has a display on show in Sandy Library, trying to recruit more athletes and runners to join us.  Feel free to pop down and have a look, it's obviously free (as long as you can handle the fame).  Gavin says he hopes to have us up in the London Portrait Gallery by next summer.

    The Tuesday Night Programme (updated)

We have decided to move the Navigators Way "away" run from Tuesday 27th July to Tuesday 3rd August.  The reason for the above swap around is to have an easier training session the day before the Bedford 5K (Wed 28th July) in which many of you have expressed an interest; running 7 miles around the Navigators Way the day before the Bedford 5K is not the best preparation for our newer runners!

Aug  3rd     Away Day - Navigators Way, Team Leader Stu
       Aug 10th     Everton Circular Route
Aug 17th     Speed work with Steve
Aug 24th     Away Day - Potton, Team Leader Zoe
Aug 31st     Rounders Match V Juniors (Provisional Date Only)
(NB: The Thursday evening programme is decided on a week to week basis depending on ability groups and racing programme.)

All feedback is greatly appreciated. Please speak to Gavin or anyone on the committee. Also any ideas you would like incorporated into the programme please let them know.

    Leagues, Series, and Other Events

    New Members

Welcome to the following athletes who have recently been elected members of the Club:
Robi Ahmed  -   a junior who lives in Sandy
Maria Tatchley  -   a senior who lives in London and joins us Second Claim - she is Tanya's mum.
Zoe Wingfield  -   a junior who lives in Meppershall
Ryan Stevens  -   a junior who lives in Potton

Best of luck in all your athletic endeavours!

Although our membership has been increasing on a fairly regular basis over the last few years, since moving to Sandy it has really blossomed - we now have nearly 140 fully paid up members.  This is very positive indeed and we look forward to breaking the 200 barrier in the not too distant future!

    New Athletic Track

We hoped that this month we could tell you the athletic track was finally under construction at Sandy Upper School, but the never ending bureaucratic machinery of local government continues to grind away and has now put a hold on the project.  The leasing arrangements between Bedfordshire County Council and Mid Beds District Council have STILL not been sorted.  This project has been in planning for years so one would have thought that such matters would have been dealt with in the necessary time scales concurrently with all the other tasks.

Several members of the Club have formally queried the situation with councillors - the information received so far indicates that a lot of senior people within the Beds CC have been involved including representatives from Education, Sport, and the Legal and Property departments but that the leasing arrangements have still to be finalised.  There also has to be a "side agreement" in place to cover some of the details associated with the management of the recreation facilities/track by MBDC who are subcontracting the day to day task of running the amenities to Stevenage Leisure Ltd.

The problem from our point of view is that unless the contractors obtain clearance to move in and start the job within the next week or so, the weather will prevent them starting the facility this year - it would probably be April next year before they could begin so another year will be lost.

    Sir Andrew Foster's Report

Sir Andrew Foster is the retiring Chairman of the Audit Commission.  During his 10 year tenure in the post he has produced some pretty telling reports on local government and services.  His report Moving On - A Review of the Need for Change in Athletics in the UK, commissioned by Sport England and UK Sport, has now been published, and calls for:
      - a complete re-structuring of the administrative side of the sport
      - the introduction of a nationwide membership scheme
      - the appointment of a performance director.

He also proposes that the school curriculum should allow youngsters a greater opportunity to take part in athletics and that Britain's league system should be restructured.  He is calling for the English Regions to be managed by a new body - English Athletics - with operational responsibility for delivering all aspects of athletics in England (except the management of elite athletes and the work on anti-doping).  Club Development, changes to the School Curriculum, and teacher training are also seen as a vital aspect of the re-vitalisation of our sport.  He also points out the fact that Athletics has the support of an unparalleled body of volunteer workers and helpers at a local level which is one of the sports defining features and must be preserved.

We await the response of those at the top with interest and hope that there will be some positive changes in the near future.

Juniors V Seniors Rounders Match and BBQ - 31st Aug

To celebrate the end of the summer season and hopefully the beginning of an excellent cross country season this years Rounders Match will be held on Tuesday 31st August.  This is an annual event where the Seniors challenge all the Juniors.  It is usually a very entertaining but competitive evening full of thrills and spills as the seniors again try to show the juniors who's boss.

    On the Physio's Bench

Two of our Senior Ladies are currently out of action:

Jennifer Hutchings will be out for 10 weeks due to severe shin splits.  She is still keeping herself fit by swimming and cycling as well as a lot of rest and recuperation.

After an operation on her foot Mel Truett is progressing well.  She has now had her bandages removed and goes into a very posh rehab facility shortly to build strength and hopefully should be back with us within 8 weeks.

Everyone wishes both of these seniors a speedy recovery as we miss them both.

EYAL report, St Ives, 25 July
Despite losing several of our young stars to illness and holidays, the Club recorded their best ever result in this league, finishing in second place with over 200 points.  There were far too many good results to list them all but here are some of the highlights :
U/13 girls:  Helen Brown won the hurdles despite laughing so much that she nearly fell over the last one. Chloe best won the 1500m improving her PB in every competition this year. Not content with this she went directly to the long jump and with one jump, won it. Kayleigh Huckle, who had also just finished the 1500m, won the B string long jump. This may not be good news for other jumpers as running 1500m is now the official warm up for long jump !
U/15 girls:  Despite being well off her best, Katie Frost was still good enough to win the high jump and new recruits, Sophie Dyer and Taya Kitely were A and B winners of the javelin
U/17 girls:  Despite missing half their team through illness and holidays, the girls still won their part of the competition. Naomi Swales won the hurdles in a PB. Aileen Russell won the 800m and Frankie Birch won the discus. Hayley Wright brought the relay team home in 1st place.
U/13 boys:  George Humberstone won the 100m, Connor Best came 2nd in every event that he did, and Tom Hunt came 2nd in the 1500m in his first event for the Club. This was the only age group where we did not finish a relay team.
U/15 boys:  Jorden Best won the high jump, Sean Davie and Daniel Hunt were A and B winners in the shot and Nick Gilbert ran 4.50.4 for 2nd in the 1500m
U/17 boys:   Craig Morse ran a very quick 56.0 for 2nd place in the 400m and Kieran and Justin Best amassed 18 points between them.
After the four rounds, the Club very narrowly missed out on promotion to Division 1 - a big improvement on finishing last in 2003!
