Everyone is welcome to join in on the Kingfisher Way training run on 6th August.  The 21 mile route from Baldock to Tempsford follows the River Ivel from its source, finishing at its confluence with the river Great Ouse.  Runners can join in at any point along the way (e.g. Langford, Biggleswade, Sandy) for a shorter run.  Contact Nigel for details.

    News of members...

    We bid "Adieu" to Jan

As many people will know, Jan Forrester has recently left her home in Clifton and moved up with her partner, Tony, to pastures new in Derbyshire.  Jan did a lot to boost the female membership of the club when we were at an all time low and worked very hard for many years as Lady Captain.  We wish them both all the very best and look forward to seeing them during visits to the Peak District.

    The Parents Perspective

Alice Middleton ran at the English Schools Championships in Gateshead on the 7th and 8th July 2006.  Her mother Helen sent us this account...

Once the letter came through informing Alice that she had been selected to run the 400m in the senior category we filled out all necessary forms and returned a cheque to the team manager.  We went on to organise days off from work, and accommodation in Gateshead which we were told can be hard to come by during the competition.  That done it remained to deliver Alice to Hastingsbury School on the Thursday for a team meeting and for us to make our way up to Gateshead while Alice travelled up with Team Bedfordshire.

We next saw Alice at the Gateshead Stadium with the rest of the team who all wore their Bedfordshire track suits and we started to get an idea of how big the event really is - over 45 Counties represented!

The competition started and amazingly the timetable ran like clockwork - before we knew it Alice was lining up for her heat of the race.

Now that was nerve racking and speaking for myself I was exhausted when she got to the finish line and to be honest really didn't know where she had come.  It took a text message to inform me that she came in 3rd on a PB and that she was into the final!

The next day we were back.  Events proceeded at pace and although she didn't run until the afternoon, we were able to watch some great athletics and of course the parade of athletes, before it was her turn to run.  Alice came in 8th (and I know that she was a little disappointed) but by then it didn't really matter.  Just being there and being part of such a prestigious event was enough - I know Alice is already thinking that she WILL be there next year and planning her strategy to improve on her times.

Brian and I as always are tremendously proud of Alice and her athletics and are grateful to Biggleswade Athletics Club for the welcome Alice got last year when she joined the club, for the coaching Alice has received and particularly to David Brown for his encouragement, support and continual faith in what he believes Alice can achieve.
