NEWS   FOR
YOUNG   ATHLETES

Christmas Handicap 'Fairy' Run
Sat 21 December at 10:00am

This year's Christmas 'Fairy' runs will take place as normal from the RSPB Car Park on the Sandy/Potton road.   There will be a 1 mile race for Juniors and a 3 mile race for Seniors.   The minimum age for the senior run is 13 years.   After the races, we will retire to the Sir William Peel PH in Sandy for drinks and nibbles.   Please let Roger or any committee member or coach know if you plan to run since we need to work out "handicap" times for all senior runners.   And don't forget that Fancy Dress, especially something to do with Fairies, may improve your handicap!   Even if you are not running, please come along to support this fun event and join in with the after-run festivities.

Annual Subscriptions / Change of Circumstance

Don't forget that Annual Subscriptions become due on 1st January - £5 for those who are under 17, or who are still at school, and £12 for all others.   Full family membership is £25 and up to three youngsters in one family may join for £12.   Please make payment to Chris Clarke, Stuart Galloway, or any Committee member.   Cheques should be made out to "Biggleswade AC".   Please make sure that you get your payment in as soon as possible.

Also, if you have moved, or changed your telephone number, or e-mail address and have not let the Club know, please advise Stuart Galloway accordingly.   It is important that Club records are kept up to date.

- Sun 22 Dec at Rowney Warren, meet in the car park at 10:30am

Workshop at Luton

Rachel Bellamy who attended the workshop has sent us this report
On 29th September 15 athletes from Biggleswade AC attended a coaching workshop at Luton, organised by the Eastern Athletic Association in conjunction with the AAA of England.   There were other athletes from other clubs and we soon made new friends.   The day comprised of introductions, and then we were split into different discipline groups.   I was with the sprint group.   We did a lot of warming up exercises, and then we started training.   We did a lot of strength exercises and worked a lot with medicine balls.   We then had lunch and afterwards returned to our groups.   Later there was a group question and answer talk where we discussed what we had done.   This was very good because the coaches picked-up on how we could improve, by changing this and that.   The day was very enjoyable, as we all learnt something, as well as meeting new and old friends.

Stocking fillers

It is not too late to order club T-shirts, sweatshirts etc for delivery before Christmas.   See Ken for details.

Club President

We are delighted to announce that Bill Jordan has kindly agreed to become our new Club President.   Bill was a member of Biggleswade AC back in the early 1980s and he has been very supportive in recent years by sponsoring club events such as the Schools Cross Country Relays and the Sandy 10 road race.   Welcome back Bill.

Annual Club Dinner - Friday 24th January 2003

Our annual club dinner is planned for Friday 24th January at the Green Man in Stanford.   Please let Stuart or Nigel know as soon as possible if you are coming.   More details in next month's Newsletter.

Le Touquet Weekend - 4th/5th/6th July 2003

Plans are progressing for our running weekend in Le Touquet next July.   We will soon be requesting a deposit from all participants to enable us to book accommodation and make travel arrangements.

50th Anniversary Party

Over 40 people came along to a splendid evening at Everton Village Hall on Friday 22nd November to celebrate the Club's 50th anniversary.   It was especially pleasing to see so many ex-members of the club, and to welcome our new Club President, Bill Jordan, to his first social event.

London Marathon Club Places

We have again received two guaranteed club entries for the London Marathon 2003.   If you would like to be considered for one of these places, particularly if your personal entry is rejected, then let Stuart Galloway know by 13th December.   The committee will be considering applications soon after that.   (Those who have entered the event in their own right should hear the result of the ballot in early December.)

SEAA Cross Country Championships
Sat 25 January 2003: Bicton College, East Devon.

We have now received entry forms for this event.   We must have names of those who wish to run by 5th December at the latest so please let Neil Gregory or Stuart Galloway know as soon as possible if you wish to compete.   The cost will be £3 for Seniors/Vets and £2 for all other athletes. The order of the day is as follows:-
 U15 Boys  4500m  11.00am      U17 & Junior Women  5000m  12.50pm
 U13 Girls  3000m  11.25am      Junior Men  8000m  1.15pm

Welcome!

A big welcome to three athletes who have been elected members of the Club this month - Andrew Darnell and Carl Kingston who live in Sandy, and Jonathan Best who lives in Biggleswade.   Good luck in your running fellers!

Looking after yourself - eating and running

Runners sometimes ask themselves whether it is advisable to eat something before a longer early morning run.   Well, the answer is yes, one should, if the body will accept it - remember you may not have eaten for nearly 12 hours otherwise.   Muscles will receive a supply of energy to help maintain stamina and the brain will receive the necessary nutrients to function properly.

However, you may have to get up that bit earlier because it is also a good idea to leave a reasonable time period between eating and the run - it depends on your body but at least an hour is advisable because of the possibility of cramps or nausea.

Choose high carbohydrate foods low in fat but with some protein.   Drink a half pint of water or so before the food.   Toast and fruit and/or cereal with skimmed or semi-skimmed milk is ideal.

Free Chocolate for Juniors

As part of the seniors recruitment drive Gavin has pledged to donate a chocolate bar to any juniors who introduce a new senior member to our club who then comes running with us more than twice.   Even if its your Mum or Dad, next door neighbour or just a runner you know who doesn't come to the club.   If you require some proper invitations to entice them please see any of the senior members.   So get pestering and earn those chocolate bars.

  • Hall Athletics dates over Christmas
The last session before Christmas will be on Monday Dec 22nd.   We will then resume on Monday 6th January.

  • Junior Page on Web Site
It does not exist yet, but Ken is after material to start one.   Anything that is of interest - it does not need to be strictly 'athletic' in nature.

In the Athletics Weekly 18th Nov were the Girls U15 UK National Rankings.   In the High Jump, Lauren Ambrose was listed as equal 4th, which is an incorrect result - Lauren has jumped higher than the listed 1.64 M.   We will be requesting an amendment to the stats.   Also, not listed but Lauren has run a 11.86 secs 75 M Hurdles race which would give her 17th UK ranking position.   Next week is the Boys U15 rankings.
