Club Dinner - Friday 30th January
We have decided to hold the annual club dinner on Friday 30th January, at a venue yet to be determined.  Please put the date in your diaries and come along 6to what always turns out to be a very convivial evening.  Please let Stuart Galloway or Nigel Bush know as soon as possible if you can come so that we can book a suitable venue.  As you are probably aware the Club trophies are presented annually at this event so do come along to congratulate the worthy winners.  We have two new trophies to present this year, those for the male and female half-marathon champions.

Children in Athletics  Kings Lynn  Sun 9th Nov
Level 1 Course  Twickenham  Sat 29 Nov
Children in Athletics  Twickenham  Sun 30 Nov

Congratulations to Graham Russell who has completed his coaching courses up to level 2 (endurance).  Graham has already helped with Sports Hall sessions and we greatly value his commitment and enthusiasm.

    A Plea to Parents

It is looking fairly certain that an athletic track is to be built at Sandy in the near future, which is very good news for the Club.  However, we do not have nearly enough coaches to fully utilise such a facility.   While we value unqualified help, we can only make limited use of volunteeers, for insurance reasons.   All such volunteers can only help under the direct supervision of a coach for the Club's insurance to be valid.

On an, as yet, unspecified day in January, there will be a local one day Children in Athletics course, giving participants a licence ( and hence insurance) to coach 8-13 year olds.  This can later be extended to give a level 2 full coaching qualification if required.

To be certain that this course takes place, we have already undertaken to find at least three volunteers to take part.  All costs will be borne by the Club.

As the date has yet to be fixed, we realise that a definite commitment may be not be possible but if you feel that you may be able to participate then please let Ken, David or Stuart know.

    The Proposed Athletic Track

MBDC have finally decided that the new Athletic Track will be built at Sandy Upper School.  This is excellent news for the club - we had fears that increasing costs may have made the project a non-starter.   We look forward to working with the various bodies in helping to make the whole enterprise a success, and will be attending a series of meetings over the next few months.   It is hoped that the track may be laid over the coming summer and be ready for use by August/September 2004.

    Bedfordshire AAA congratulates Biggleswade AC.

At the Beds AAA AGM on 14 Nov, the Hon Secretary Dr Bernard Wells in his summing up of the year mentioned the success of Biggleswade Athletic Club for its achievement for attaining Club Mark - the first in the UK.  Also there was a mention of two of our young athletes for their achievements Jorden Best (U13 Boys) and Kay Brown (U15 Girls).

    Biggleswade Ladies Rugby

Following a very successful (but painful!) training night with the Biggleswade Rugby Club, we learn that they are hoping to form a ladies team to play the sport.  If you know of anybody who is interested then Paula on 01767-683505 would be very keen to hear from them.

    UK:Athletics - Recent Developments

David Moorcroft, the Chief Executive of UK:Athletics, has recently written an open letter giving details of the proposals for the modernisation of Athletics in the UK.  UK:Athletics has been offered £41m by the Government and Sport England with the proviso that a plan was produced detailing how the sport of Athletics would be developed across all sectors whilst demonstrating long-term financial sustainability, and with the appropriate structures in place.   There is also a unique "Legacy" grant of £20m still available.

Funding would be made available to support individual club development needs, delivery of a balanced competition structure, coach and officials education, refurbishment of existing club tracks, support to the schools' sport curriculum, and the integration of disability athletics into mainstream sport.

However, the re-structuring has caused a stumbling block.   Twelve "Hubs" are proposed across the UK to work as closely as possible with the affiliated clubs and the athletes.   It is proposed that each Hub would manage the sport from grass roots right through to the elite level with a delegated budget and the ability to respond to local needs.

It is the integration of the Hubs into the new structure that is being contested.   UK:Athletics feel that the new structure must be built around the Hubs rather than the Hubs being bolted onto the existing structure.   The AAA of England and the Territorial Athletic Associations are fearful that they will be disbanded and that de-centralisation will not work.   However, it would seem that all the parties involved are committed to arriving at a suitable solution and meetings are currently being held to try and establish a structure acceptable to everybody.

    Club Membership - Annual Subscriptions

Please don't forget that annual subscriptions become due on 1st January 2004.  Membership is still only £12 for seniors and £5 for juniors and Second Claim members.  Prompt payment would be very much appreciated.  Don't forget that it is a Club Rule that you may not compete for the Club after 31st January if your subscription has not been renewed.
