Fairy Run - Sat 18 Dec

The 2004 Fairy Run handicap race, on Saturday 18th December will again start and finish at the RSPB Headquarters in Sandy on Potton Road.  Car parking will be as normal at the end of the drive into the main RSPB car park, about 600 meters after the entrance and shop.  Please be at the car park for 10am .

The junior handicap run (1 mile) will start at 10.15am and the senior handicap run (3 miles) will start at 10.30am.  Fairy costumes are optional for the race, but could improve your handicap.  Please let Damien know (01767 227589 or damien.pitts@ntlworld.com) if you plan on doing the run, so that he can calculate your handicap.

After the run, everyone is welcome at the William Peel PH (opposite St Swithun's Church) in Sandy for drinks and a small buffet.  Late in the afternoon, we will be visiting a few PH in Potton and Everton before heading back to Sandy.

... and the Three Counties Cross Country, Letchworth

The day after the Fairies run is the next Three Counties Cross Country race at Letchworth.  To ensure that we enjoy ourselves the day before and to make sure that we have a good turnout at this race as well, Damien has booked a 14 seater minibus to take us to Letchworth.  As there are only 14 seats available, please let Damien know as soon as possible if you would like to be on the minibus.  Collection points will be sorted out nearer the time, as this will depend on who will be in the minibus.  The cost per head for the minibus will be £5.00, if we can fill the minibus.

    Club Membership - Annual Subscriptions

Please don't forget that annual subscriptions become due on 1st January 2005.  Membership is still only £12 for seniors and £5 for juniors.  Second Claim membership costs £7.  Prompt payment would be very much appreciated.  Don't forget it is a Club Rule that you may not compete for the Club after 31st January if your subscription has not been renewed .

    Christmas Holiday Training

Our annual winter run along the Kingfisher Way is planned for Tuesday 28th December.  The Kingfisher Way is a 21 Mile footpath that follows the River Ivel from Baldock to Tempsford.  For those that would prefer to run a shorter distance, you have the option of finishing at Biggleswade (12 miles) or Sandy (16 miles).  Shared transport to Baldock, with pickup points at Tempsford, Sandy and Biggleswade, will be arranged.  Please talk to Nigel Bush (01767 682251) if interested.

    Sandy 10 - Sunday 3rd April

Planning has now started for next year's Sandy 10 mile road race - organised by the club.  This will be the 22nd running of the race and we hope to make it the biggest event yet.  As in previous years, we hope that club members will support us on race day, acting as marshals, drink station helpers, baggage handlers, etc.  More details will be published in next months Newsletter.

    Club Dinner - 14th January 2005

Over 60 people have indicated they would like to come to the Club Dinner on Friday 14th January (7:30pm for 8:00pm).  The Green Man at Stanford has now been booked for the function, a venue we have used on a couple of occasions before.  Details of the menu will be published in the near future, so please advise Stuart Galloway of what you would like to eat as soon as possible after that - we need to let the restaurant know in good time.  As you are probably aware, the Club trophies are presented annually at this event, so do come along to congratulate the worthy winners.  It is always a very convivial evening.

    Ironman Florida Race,  Nov 6
Debbie Knot competed in this gruelling event - a 3.8km Sea Swim, a 112 Mile Bike ride, and a 26.2 Mile (Marathon) Run.  Her time was 15hours 58mins 23secs and she was 4th British Lady home.  This is her account:

Night Before :  I had to rack the bike and attend an athletes briefing, all about the course.  We were also warned that the swim could be cancelled due to the high winds, I was thinking please don't...

Swim :  What a morning and the sea was very calm.  The Elites started 10mins earlier than the rest of us.  Lucky cause I wasn't sure about the swim course! 5 mins before the start, the sound of Queen and "We will rock you" blurted out....7am and we all started.  Knowing that I was a poor swimmer, I started at the back.  The swim was a two lap affair.  After 400m got into a comfortable front crawl position, but I did have a couple of argie bargies, with this rather big bloke, who decided he wanted to swim on top of me!

We all got out at the end of the first lap and we had to run on the beach and round a pole.  I looked at the clock and it showed 51mins 45secs, I thought gosh! 10mins faster the Sherborne 1/2 Ironman in August.  Started the second lap and started to tie up a bit at 3km but still managed to get to the end.  Overall swim time 1hour 47mins.

Ran out of the water and had to run up this ramp, and in a wetsuit!  Hill training with a difference.  Got into transition and all this fuss about getting me changed!  The helpers just wouldn't leave me alone.  I wouldn't mind if they were blokes.

Bike :  Hooray I thought, my best discipline.  Until the wind, there was a head wind for the whole of the 112 miles, I was thinking, am I ever going to get out of this wind!  No!  It was there with me all of the time!  At 70-80 miles cramp and foot pains started so got off the bike and walked abit.... at about 100miles the bike was making funny noises, so stopped again to inspect, nothing wrong, it sounded like one of the tyres was going to explode....  Thought, I just plough on, only 12 miles to go, the ankle was starting to hurt, got to the finish....Hooray!  Somehow overtook 100 people!

Run :  The pain in my ankle was really hurting, managed to run 3 miles and was forced to walk 23miles.  All I wanted to do was to finish.

I was so happy to finish!  I have now entered Ironman Austria for next July!
