Sandy 10 and 2 Mile Fun Run

Plans are progressing well and entries have already started to arrive.   With the renewed interest in Road Racing we could reach our limit of 400 runners this year.   Thanks to all those who have volunteered to help on the day, but we still need more people for marshalling duties please.

... and German Visitors ...
This year there are 12 runners from the Hanau Lauftreff who would like to come across and run the Sandy 10.   We would love to hear from anybody who feels that they might be able to accommodate one (or even two) of them at home for the evenings of Friday 4th April through to and including Sunday 6th April.   This would only really be bed and breakfast because they will be out during the days and evenings.   Full programme will be given in the next newsletter.   They all speak English so if you can help us please contact Stuart Galloway on 01767-223942.

Le Touquet weekend 4th-6th July

Everyone who has shown interest in going on this weekend in France has been contacted with initial information (12 so far, including partners).   If you have not received any information, but would like to go, please contact Nigel (01767 682251).   We are planning to all travel together in a 15 or 17 Seat Minibus, and once the bus is full any additional travellers will have to make their own travelling arrangements.   There is a choice of either a 10k or 20k race, which take place at 5pm on Saturday afternoon.

Annual Subscriptions / Contact Details

Don't forget that Annual Subscriptions became due on 1st January - £5 for those who are under 17, or who are still at school, and £12 for all others.   Full family membership is £25, and up to three youngsters in one family may join for £12.   Please give or send your payment to Chris Clarke, Stuart Galloway, or any Committee member.   Cheques should be made out to "Biggleswade AC".   Please make sure that you get your payment in as soon as possible.

Also, if you have moved, or changed your telephone number or e-mail address, and have not let the Club know, please advise Stuart Galloway accordingly - it is important that Club records are kept up to date.

Annual General Meeting - Tuesday 25th March 2003

Just to remind you of the date on which this important event is to be held.   Please note it in your diary and keep the evening free.   Come and make your views known - it is an important part of the communication process between members and the committee.   The venue is the Weatherly Centre (next to the Biggleswade Recreation School and Stratton School) in the Purcell Room at 8.00pm.

  1. Any written nominations for the posts of Officers on the Committee must be received by the Secretary no later than 18th March and must be seconded by another member of the Club.   Nominations in writing take precedence over nominations on the evening.
  2. Any member over the age of 17 may request that an item for discussion be added to the Agenda but details must be received by the Secretary in writing by 4th March.   There will be no Agenda Item of Any Other Business on the evening.
  3. Only paid-up members over the age of 17 may vote at the AGM, or hold a place on any Committee.
  4. A copy of the Agenda will be sent to all members by 11th March and a copy of the Minutes of the previous AGM held on 26th March 2002 will be made available to members attending the meeting, prior to the start.   If you wish to receive a copy beforehand please advise the Secretary by 4th March.

Schools' Cross-Country Relays
Rowney Warren, Tues 18 Mar, at 4:20pm

The Club are organising a cross-country relay event for all middle and upper schools in Mid-Beds.   Bedford upper schools have also been invited.   Despite the invitations having just gone out, we already have more than 40 teams entered.   This is a difficult time for us to get marshalls and other helpers so if there is any chance that you might be available to help then please tell Ken or David.

National Cross Country Championships
Parliament Hill, 22 Feb

Our entries have now been acknowledged by the SEAA.   Best of luck to those who have entered.

Club Dinner

33 people attended the event at the Green Man in Stanford where we were served an excellent meal and the Club Trophies were awarded to the worthy winners.   It was good to see so many people present and hopefully those that were able to come enjoyed the evening.   We will be planning another informal get-together just before the Sandy 10

Looking after yourself... Horwill's Rule

Well-prepared 10K runners often wonder how much speed can be generated in speedier, shorter races (such as 800 and 1500m competitions).   Although the training for such events is different from 10K and marathon preparations, one can use 'Horwill's Rule' to calculate the possibilities.   The Rule says that when race distance is halved, speed should improve by about four seconds per 400 metres.   Thus, you should be able to complete a 5K 16 seconds per mile faster than your 10K, a 3K around 32 seconds per mile quicker, 1500 metres 48 seconds faster, and 800 metres over a minute faster (when expressed as a pace per mile).

Saturday Training

Steve Worrall is continuing with the Saturday training sessions, which have proved to be popular and usefull.
Future sessions, all at 10:30am, are:
 1 Feb  Rowney Warren
 1 March  Biggleswade Common
 8 March  Rowney Warren
 15 March  Biggleswade Common
