    Affiliation to England Athletics

We have received further notification concerning our forthcoming, reluctant, affiliation to England Athletics.  We will have to provide full details of the club and its officers, number of members and their details, disciplines, fees paid with breakdown of calculation, and contact details.  The Club will have to pay £50 per annum for the privilege.

A membership fee of £3 this year and £5in subsequent years will apply to all competing members of the club aged 11 years and upwards.  Other members such as volunteers, officials, and helpers will not have to pay.

Each member of the club will receive a membership card - those given to competing members will be in the form of a competition licence.  Cards will be posted directly to the members.  A covering letter will describe how to access the database and complete the process for data protection clearance in respect of use of data by England Athletics.  Members will be able to access their own record.  A club will have access to all of their members for management purposes, and competition providers will be granted access to data necessary for their event such as name, DOB, gender, and contact details.

Although it is not clear about how the £3 membership fees will be collected, our guess is that it will be through the club.  We will let you know.

Annual Club Dinner and Presentation Evening
Friday 19 January 2007 - The Green Man (Stanford)

Many thanks to those of you who came to the Club Dinner and made the evening such a success.  Over 60 members attended and, hopefully, enjoyed an excellent meal served up in very convivial surroundings (many thanks to Stuart for once again organising a superb evening).

Trophies were awarded to the 2006 senior and junior champions, and the much coveted Club Person of the Year trophy was awarded to Lee Welham for his outstanding contribution to Junior coaching and junior/senior integration.  Other award winners included Ian Skerratt, Karen Worrall, and Debbie Bryant.  It was also wonderful to see Andy Darnell at the dinner looking exceptionally well.

Sandy 10 Road Race - Sun 25 Mar

As at 29th January there are already 165 runners who have entered the Sandy 10 - this time last year, which was a record entry year, it was only 140 runners.  It looks like we are going to have a full race some time before the actual race day.

This year the event is being sponsored by Brooks Running, Jordans Cereals and Sandy Sports Centre.  Entries are flooding in for the race, and we expect to have reached our race limit of 550 runners by the 25th March.  In order to provide a safe and well marshalled event, we need your help with various duties on the day.  Please let Nigel or Gavin know if you are prepared to help.

As in previous years, if you would like to run in the event, we do ask that you supply another person (who should not be a club member) to help with duties on the day.  As club membership grows, and we have more offers of help, we hope to allow more members to take part in the race in future years.  Note that next year (2008) is the 25th running of the Sandy 10 - a special year!

    Eastern Veterans Athletic Club (EVAC)

EVAC was formed in 1978 to promote athletic events throughout East Anglia for Veteran (or Masters) athletes.  A Veteran athlete is defined as being 35 years and older nowadays! EVAC stages championship road races at distances of 5k, 5m, 10k, 10m, Half Marathon and a Road Relay.  They also stage a Cross Country Championship and a Track and Field league.  These are all very enjoyable and offer good competition whether you are 35 or 75 years old.  Awards are presented in 5 year age groups, so you are competing against athletes of your own age.

You can join EVAC as a 2nd claim member for £10 per year.  Once a member you will receive the quarterly "Eastern Vet" magazine and be eligible to run in all their championship races.  If would like to join or find out more, please contact Nigel.

Schools' Cross-Country Relays - Help required
Rowney Warren, Wed 21 March., 3pm

Last year we had 300 children from 11 schools in the county and it gets more popular every year.  It does take quite a few volunteers to make it run smoothly and these are difficult to find on a Wednesday afternoon!  If you are able to help with course setting out, marshalling, recording or anything else, we can certainly use you.  Please let Ken Prior know ASAP.

Three Peaks of Great Britain Challenge

You may have already seen this on the web site forum.  So far 5 people have shown an interest in running/walking the Three Peaks of Great Britain this summer (Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike, Snowdon).  The plan is to complete the challenge within 24 hours.  If you are interested, please see the Forum entry or contact Nigel.  Provisional date is 29th/30th June.

From time to time on a Thursday evening Graham Bufton (Buffy) (Coach to the stars) from Bedford International Athletics Track will be down to give his expert coaching.

If anyone would like to organise an AWAY DAY in your village or town in 2007, or a run on your favourite training route, please let Gavin or one of the committee know (AWAY DAYS for 2007 are already planned for Grafham Waters, Royston Hills, Bedford Embankment and Parks, Old Warden).

Chiltern Cross-Country League  Slough, 13 Jan
Biggleswade got off to a very good start with Molly McKenzie appearing in 3rd place two thirds of the way round the 1500m U11 girls' course.  She slowed slightly over the final few hundred yards but still finished in a magnificent 5th place in a very high quality field.  Young Tiffany Jones, who at 9 still has two more seasons in this age group, ran extremely well to finish in 44th place.

In the corresponding boys race, Tom Stead also had an exceptional race, similar to Molly's but in reverse.  Tom was 5th or 6th most of the way round but accelerated strongly towards the end and finished in third place, just 7 seconds behind the winner.  Also in this race was Oliver Godding who was dead last at half way but who also ran strongly over the second half and finished over 100m in front of the tail of the field.

Ruth Flory had her best race of the season finishing 6th in the U13 girls' race while Chelsea McKenzie ran a well judged solid race in the U15 girls' race to finish 9th.

The final round of the league is at Wing on 17th February
