Annual Subscriptions

Annual Subscriptions are now due (and we would greatly appreciate prompt payment).  Subscriptions this year are:
 Senior Member  £20
 Junior Member  £12
 Junior Second Claim Member  £5
 Senior Second Claim Member  £7
For Second Claim members, competition will be limited unless the member has affiliated to England Athletics through their First Claim club - if not, it is advisable to join us as First Claim.

Subscription fees have increased because of the affiliation fees to governing bodies that we are going to have to pay from now on, on your behalf.

Beginners / Bring a Friend - Tue 5 Feb

Tuesday 5th of February is "Bring a Friend Night".  The night will be for everyone, but special attention will be given to all "new" runners.  So if you have a friend that keeps saying "I'll come down one week" this is the week to bring them.  Make their New Year's resolution a reality!!

It will be a taster of what we are all about.  We will still meet between 7 & 8 pm.

Club Annual Dinner and Presentation Evening
Friday 25 Jan at The Green Man, Stanford

61 members including friends and family enjoyed an excellent meal at the Green Man in Stanford.  Many thanks to Stuart for once again organising a superb evening.  Trophies were awarded to the 2007 senior and junior champions, and the much coveted Club Person of the Year trophy was awarded to Anne Lincoln for her outstanding contributions to the club over the past 12 months.  Rob Morgan was voted the Most Improved Senior runner in a strongly contested field of improvers.

25th Anniversary Sandy 10 - Sun 30 March

This year's event is again being sponsored by Brooks Running, Jordans Cereals and Sandy Sports Centre, with Buntingford Brewery providing a "25th anniversary bottle of beer" to all finishers.  Entries are flooding in for the race, and we expect to reach the race entry limit of 600 runners by the 30th March (we already have 130 entries, a record for this time of year).  In order to provide a safe and well marshalled event, we need your help with various duties on the day.  As in previous years, if you would like to run in the event, we do ask that you supply another person (not be a club member) to help with duties on the day.

If you are available to marshall / help out on water stations / generally help out on the day, please add your name to the string at Your club needs YOU on the website forum, or let Nigel or Gavin know.  Without your help Sandy 10 would never happen.

The Icknield Way Run - 24 to 26 May

Ken Prior has sent us this proposal for a long-distance run...

The oldest road in Britain runs past our back door (relatively speaking).  A road that was already ancient when the Romans used it - The Icknield Way.

The whole route runs from the west country to Wells-Next-The-Sea.  There is a local bit - the designated Icknield Way Path which starts at Ivinghoe Beacon and runs to just short of Thetford.  A mere 104 miles.

The route runs round Luton, to Hitchin.  Letchworth, Baldock, Royston, Linton.  Great Chesterford, Cheveley, and on to Thetford.  Mostly off road, much of it is along broad and ancient grassy tracks.  Just right for running.

I intend to run it over three days on the Late Spring Bank Holiday weekend at the end of May.  OK, top speed will be a slow jog and anything resembling a hill will be walked - and there will be regular refuelling stops, (not pubs though.  Tried that once before.  Not a good idea).

It will definitely not be a race but a 'voyage of discovery'.  My hope is that as many of the Club as possible will take part.  We can stagger starts and have groups so everyone can run at their own pace.

The run splits nicely into three 35 mile sections.  The first day would finish at Baldock railway station.  The second at Balsham (5 miles from Linton) and the final day at Thetford Railway Station (or a pub nearby !)

If you are thinking 'I cannot do that' then think again.  You are all capable of much more than you think - and think of the buzz when you have completed it !

I definitely expect to see anyone who has been to any of Richard Gilbert's seminars there.

Think about it.

For updates, see A slightly longer weekend run than usual on the website forum.

Paula Dawson, Zoe Dawson, Gav Elliott and Rob "probably do a bit" Morgan have all signed up for this adventure.  Please see Ken if you want to join his happy band of followers.

Special Coaching Sessions

12 members from Biggleswade (Coaches and athletes, seniors and juniors) attended the first of 3 technical coaching at Bedford on 26th January, for the disciplines of High Jump, Javelin, Hammer, and Hurdles.

The second session is at Luton on 16th Feb with the remaining disciplines of

The 3rd session is a follow-on from the first two with all disciplines at Sandy on 15th March.
