NEWS   FOR
YOUNG   ATHLETES

Sandy 10 mile Race and 2 mile Fun Run
Sunday 6th April 2003

The date for this year's Sandy 10 has been fixed for Sunday 6th April - just one week before the London Marathon.   This is a special year as it celebrates the 20th year of the Sandy 10!   This year we have decided to donate all proceeds to the NSPCC and Save the Children.

The race was the brainchild of Paul Tomlin back in 1983.   When Paul moved away from the area in 1998, the race missed a year, but in 1999 Biggleswade AC took over the organisation, and the event is once again proving popular with hundreds of runners.

This year we are moving to a new race HQ at Sandy Upper School in Engayne Avenue, where we can enjoy more space and improved facilities for the runners.   This does mean, however, that we will need more help on the day for activities such as Late Entries, Baggage handling, Refreshments, etc.   So please put this date in your dairy and volunteer your help if you can.   The race route will be unchanged apart from some minor changes to the start and finish positions in Sunderland Road.   Again we will be asking for volunteers to help marshal the course.   It is crucial for the future of this popular race that we have sufficient marshals to ensure a safe event.   Please help if you can.

Annual Club Dinner
Friday 24th January 2003

The annual club dinner will be at the Green Man in Stanford, starting at 7:30pm.   Please book your places with Stuart (01767 223942) or Nigel (10767 682251) as soon as possible.

Le Touquet Weekend
Fri 4th
to Sun 6th July 2003

Plans are progressing for our running weekend in Le Touquet next July.   There are 10K and 5K races, or you can just come for the beer or wine!   We will soon be requesting a deposit from all participants to enable us to book accommodation and make travel arrangements.

Annual Subscriptions / Contact Details

Don't forget that Annual Subscriptions become due on 1st January - £5 for those who are under 17, or who are still at school, and £12 for all others.   Full family membership is £25, and up to three youngsters in one family may join for £12.   Please give or send your payment to Chris Clarke, Stuart Galloway, or any Committee member.   Cheques should be made out to "Biggleswade AC".   Please make sure that you get your payment in as soon as possible.

Also, if you have moved, or changed your telephone number or e-mail address, and have not let the Club know, please advise Stuart Galloway accordingly - it is important that Club records are kept up to date.

Annual General Meeting - Tuesday 25th March 2003

Just to remind you of the date on which this important event is to be held.   Please note it in your diary and keep the evening free.   Come and make your views known - it is an important part of the communication process between members and the committee.   We will let you know the venue in a future newsletter but it will probably be the Weatherly Centre - Biggleswade.

London Marathon Club Places

The places have been allocated to Graham Brown and Roger Wadeley.     Best of luck in the training chaps and commiserations to those who were unsuccessful in their applications.

Looking after yourself...

Don't forget to go out for a run over Christmas!   It might be a time for a little more food and drink but all the more reason to get that heart pumping properly again and to shed a few calories.   The long term forecast is for sunny spells and a few showers with S to SW winds over 25th to 28th Dec, but veering to the N later in the week (so a bit colder).

SEAA Membership Scheme

If accepted at the AGM of the SEAA in April 2003, this scheme will start on 1st January 2004, with data collection taking place in the latter part of 2003.   The data collection will enable agreed lists of club members, on which fee payment will be based.

Individual membership cards will be issued centrally, either directly to members or through clubs.   The SEAA will register under the Data Protection Act.   Some information exchange between governing bodies, territorial associations, clubs, and event organisers would be necessary for legitimate purposes, and in the interest of the sport, only.   Club affiliation fees will continue to be payable but probably at a reduced rate (we had to pay £120 this year to affiliate to the SEAA).

Pre-payment will be required and membership numbers quoted on applications to take part in SEAA championships.   No conclusion has yet been reached as to the level of the fee but it is expected to cover more than just the administrative costs and that there should be a tangible benefit to individual members.   The Association is keen to include enhanced insurance cover as part of the package for members.

We will keep you posted with developments.

Sport England Clubmark Scheme

The Club has been selected to take part in the initial trials of this scheme to ensure that a club is committed to providing a safe, effective, and friendly environment for children and young people, by providing quality coaching and support in a secure environment.   The whole scheme is designed to enable young athletes to progress along a development pathway, appropriate to their ability and be encouraged to participate in athletics for life.   We shall be assessed accordingly.

Coaching Courses

The Club is perpetually short of qualified coaches.   Level 1 (entry level) courses are being held at Bedford (9th Feb) and Norwich (16th Feb) .   A level 2 course is being held at Cambridge in March.   No previous knowledge is assumed for the level 1 course and you do not need to be an active athlete.   The cost will be heavily subsidised by the Club.   Places are limited so give your name to Ken ASAP if you feel able to help.

UK Ranking Award
Further to the success of Lauren Ambrose achieving a UK ranking award, in the U13 Girls category Kay Brown also achieved this accolade.   In the U13 Girls 70 M Hurdles Kay was 13th in a time of 11.8 secs.   The best time was achieved by 2 girls in 11.3 secs, and put them into the all-time list along with the next 3 girls up to 11.6 secs.   Unfortunately this was not a club record because the event was not in a Club or County Vest, but a County School event.   Well done Kay !!
