The background colour is currently set to an approximation to "gold", which is part of the club colours.   Do you like it, or would you prefer something more subtle? - please let me know what you think - davidhindle@msn.com

Club Membership - Annual Subscriptions

Please don't forget that annual subscriptions became due on 1st January.  Membership is still only £12 for seniors and £5 for juniors and Second Claim members.  It is a Club Rule that you may not compete for the Club after 31st January if your subscription has not been renewed.

SANDY 10 - Sunday 4th April
This year's Sandy 10, and 2 mile Fun Run, will be staged on Sunday 4th April at Sandy Upper School.  This race, now in it's 21st year, is organised by Biggleswade AC.  We need many helpers to ensure that the race is run safely, and we therefore ask all members to help us with the organisation.  Please contact
Nigel or Stuart with your offers of help.  If you would especially like to run in the race, then we ask you to provide a "non-member" in your place to help on the day.  Activities include road marshalling, drink station management, registration, baggage handling, etc.

Schools Cross-Country Relays, Rowney Warren
Tuesday March 16th
The Club are again organising the Schools Cross-Country Relays at Rowney Warren on Tuesday March 16th, beginning at 4pm.  All offers of help (marshalls, recorders, timekeepers etc) will be very gratefully received.  Please let
Ken, David or Stuart know if you may be available to help.

Club Dinner at The Wheatsheaf, Tempsford, Fri 30 Jan
As you are probably aware the Club trophies are presented annually at this event so do come along to congratulate the worthy winners.  We have two new trophies to present this year, those for the male and female Half-Marathon champions.  Please let
Stuart Galloway know as soon as possible if you wish to come to this event.  The cost of the three-course meal will be £12.50

Club Weekend Trip, 2004
In July last year we went to Le Touquet in France for a weekend and included the Le Touquet 10k and 20k races.  This was a very enjoyable weekend for both the runners and the supporters.  So what shall we do this year?  Suggestions so far have included a European City race (eg Prague), return to Le Touquet in July, or spend a weekend of walking and running in the Derbyshire or Yorkshire Dales.  Let us know what you would like to do.

English National Championships
These will take place at Leeds (W.Yorkshire) on 21st February 2004.  We have now received the Entry Forms, but very few people have expressed interest so far.  Let any member of the Committee know if you are interested in running this event.  Entries normally have to be in soon after Christmas.

London Marathon - 18 April 2004

Three people applied to be considered for the two club places.  This year it was very difficult for the committee to decide who was the most deserving (all were first-time applicants) so we held a draw which took place at the Sir William Peel on the day of the Christmas Handicap Race.  Katherine Brasier and Zoe Dawson were the first two names out of the hat, so best of luck in your training girls.  Commiserations to Tony Haymes who was the unlucky applicant.  Best of luck next year, Tony.

The Tuesday Night Programme

All events start at 7pm unless stated, and are on a Tuesday.  Meet inside the bar area of the Weatherley Centre.  Any future ideas for programme activities should be passed to Gavin or one of the committee.  We hope you will all find these events enjoyable, they are designed to improve your running and over-all fitness - all feedback is welcome.

New Members

Welcome to the following athlete who has recently been elected a member of the Club:
Tony Bedford  -  Tony is a senior who lives in Biggleswade and hails from Durban in South Africa.
Glad to have you on board, Tony, and best of luck with your running.

Coaching Sessions

  • Provisional date for weekend coaching:
        21 Feb   Bedford Track   9am

    New Athletic Track

The club was represented at the December meeting of the Athletic Track Project Team.  The architects employed by MBDC are the Gibson Hamilton Partnership.  Final plans are being drawn up for the facility at Sandy Upper School.  Planning Application has been made, (it is unlikely that MBDC will turn it down because they are also the customer), and the job is expected to go out to tender sometime in mid-February.  Completion is still scheduled for August 2004.

The Dorset Doddle - Sunday 22nd August

After one year of absence from the race calendar the event is back!  We are very pleased to have recently heard from the new organisers, the Dorset LDWA, that the event has been restored to the calendar.   A great course from Weymouth to Swanage - over 4500 feet of climbing - 32 miles of sheer magic (some might call it something else!!).   Note the date in your diaries.

Great Barford Half Marathon - Club Championship Race  14 Dec
Eight club runners took part in the Great Barford Half Marathon on a cold and windy, but sunny day.  This was the first time that we have held a club championship race over the half marathon distance, and the winners for 2003 are Ian Skerratt and Jan Forrester, based on Age-Graded times.  Congratulations to both winners and to all who took part on a testing course (there were 969 other finishers).

Biggleswade AC Christmas Handicap (Fairy Run)  20 Dec
Over 30 Club runners maintained the tradition of the Christmas "Fairy Run" at the RSPB in Sandy.  In the Junior race of 1 mile, Kieran Best came home the winner, just holding off his brother Justin.  In the Senior race of 3 miles, Emily Woodfield, previously inactive due to a recent injury, set off in third place, based on handicap times.  She surprised everyone, including herself, by overtaking the two runners in front, and then holding off the whole field to claim the prize.  A buffet was enjoyed by all in the Sir William Peel after the race.  Many new members took part for the first time, and a 'staggering' record number of 13 runners set off on the extended afternoon 7 mile run, which included visits to several interesting venues and hostelries around East Beds.
