    Club Membership - Annual Subscriptions

Please don't forget that annual subscriptions became due on 1st January 2005.  Membership is still only £12 for seniors and £5 for juniors.  Second Claim membership costs £7.  Prompt payment would be very much appreciated.

It is a Club Rule that you may not compete for the Club after 31st January if your subscription has not been renewed .

    Club Dinner - 14th January 2005

Nearly 70 people have indicated they would like to come to the Club Dinner on Friday 14th January (7:30pm for 8:00pm) at The Green Man at Stanford.  We are looking forward to a very convivial evening at which the Club Trophies will be awarded.

    Annual General Meeting

The AGM of the Club is due to be held on Tuesday 22nd March 2005 .  Please put the date in your diaries and try and be there.  More information about the event will be provided in the next Newsletter.

    Sandy 10 - Sunday 3rd April

Planning is now well underway for this year's Sandy 10 Mile road race and 2 Mile Fun Run, organised by the club.  This will be the 22nd running of the race and we hope to make it the biggest event yet.  We are grateful to Jordans Cereals for their offer of continued sponsorship, and to a new sponsor, Sweatshop Cambridge.

As in previous years, we are asking club members to help us on race day, acting as marshals, car park attendants, drink station helpers, baggage handlers, etc.  We have increased the race limit to 500 runners this year, and so it is essential that we have more marshals to ensure a safe event.  If, however, you would like to run in the event, we do ask that you provide a "non-club member" (e.g. wife, girlfriend, brother) to provide us with help on race day in your place.

Kingfisher Way training run - 28th December

Eight club members (and one dog) set off from Baldock on a crisp and sunny morning to run the Kingfisher Way on the Tuesday after Christmas.  Debs, Neil and Steve (with hound Flynn) were all running the route for the first time.

Biggleswade (12.5 miles) was reached in 2 hours where Steve decided that Flynn the dog had run far enough.  Debs carried on to record her longest run to date - nearly 16 miles - before she called it a day in Sandy.

The remaining 6 made it to the end in Tempsford (21 miles) in an overall time of 3 hours 20 mins, and a well-earned pint in the Wheatsheaf Pub.  Many thanks to Andy's wife Jo for transporting us all to the start Baldock.

Bedford Harriers Half Marathon , Sunday 12th December
    Club Championship
Held over a challenging course in Wootton, the 2004 race had a record entry of 1600 runners, and proved to be an enjoyable yet bizarre event for Biggleswade Athletic Club runners.  On the positive side, 14 Biggleswade runners took part - a record number of entries from the club.  Deb, Yvonne and Amanda were all competing in their first half marathon race and all ran superbly.

  • Ian Skerratt was the first Biggleswade runner home, to claim the club's Male Half Marathon shield, just 7 days after finishing the Luton Marathon in 3h 12m
  • Karen Worrall had a brilliant run to win the club's Female Half Marathon shield and finish 11th lady overall, and first Beds County Lady Vet 40
  • Not to be outdone, Jan Forrester showed that she's still going strong by claiming the Beds County Lady Vet 50 trophy

On the bizarre side, Zoe and Damien got stuck in pre-race traffic on the roads leading to Wootton and only just arrived in time for the delayed start, while Gavin missed the start completely - he was rumoured to be locked in a Portaloo.  To cap it all off, a local Farmer decided to enter the Christmas Spirit by herding his flock of sheep across the road at the 12 mile marker, "bah-ring" the way for dozens of flabbergasted runners!
