  NEWS   FOR   YOUNG   ATHLETES

Senior give-it-a-try pentathlon - Tues 9 Jul 7:45pm

There will be a light hearted but competitive (yes, prizes !) pentathlon for our senior members (over 17) on Tuesday 9th July at 7.45pm.   Dave and Ken will make sure all the juniors have gone and will not be able to show you up!   Events 200m, 800m, high jump, long jump, and shot.   Come and give it a go and have some fun. (Parents welcome too).

Rounders Match and Barbeque - Tues 20 Aug

End of season barbeque preceded by a Juniors v Seniors rounders match, which the Seniors will win (there was some mention of ankle weights for the Drinkwaters !)   Put the date in your diary now.

Coaching Schedule

Calling all distance runners - a rota is being drawn up to help coach our talented junior distance runners.   A schedule will be provided, you just supply some simple advice and encouragement.   Ken already has several promises (!) so your time will not come round more than once a month.   Please give your name to Ken of David on or before the 9th July.

Sandy 10 Donations

As a result of the successful Sandy 10 mile Road Race in April organised by Biggleswade AC, the race committee are delighted to announce that the money raised by the event has been donated to following local charities and good causes:

"Gavin's Way" Training Run - Tuesday July 16th @ 7pm

Following another popular run around the Navigator's Way on June 18th, when 12 club members enjoyed some warm sunny weather, we have decided to move the July training run to new surroundings.   We will meet at 7pm on Tuesday July 16th outside the Bell Public House in Sandy.   The Bell is opposite Sandy Railway station.   The route, organised by Gavin, is about 6.5 miles, and takes in the Greensand Ridge Walk and the RSPB.   Optional drinks in the Bell after the run.

Kingfisher Way Training Run - Sunday July 14th @ 9am

For those of you who fancy a longer training run along the banks of the River Ivel, we are planning to run the Kingfisher Way on Sunday 14th July. There will be optional finishes in Biggleswade (12 miles) and Sandy 16 miles) for those that do not wish to do the whole 21 miles from Baldock to Tempsford.   Call Nigel (01767 682251) if you are interested in coming along.

Brüder Grimm 82 Km - 5 Stage Race in Germany. 7th - 9th June

Two club members (Stuart and Nigel) with their wives once again visited our friends in Erlensee Germany, to take part in the Brothers Grim 82km race.   The race is run in 5 stages of approximately 10 miles each, starting on Friday evening and finishing on Sunday afternoon.   Stuart managed to complete all five stages this year, having had to pull out with an injury last year after 3 stages.   This meant he had the added bonus of partaking in two extra "mixed" showers this year!   Once again the hospitality of our German hosts was superb, and the wives were treated to sightseeing trips and a 60's Disco.   Our hosts would dearly like more of our club runners to visit next year, so please put the date in your diary (June 6th/7th/8th 2003) and book early.   This year the race reached its limit of 500 runners.
 Nigel Bush  6hrs 47mins  219th overall   21st M50 Vet
 Stuart Galloway  6hrs 56mins  250th overall   28th M50 Vet

Biggleswade Golden Jubilee Races

Three successful Trail races were held on the evening of 4th June to celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee.   Thanks to all those who helped with the event.   There were 21 Runners in the 5 Mile race, 23 runners in the 4.5Km race, and 9 Runners in the 1 Mile race.   Congratulations to all the Biggleswade AC runners who took part (see the Results section for placings of Club members).   All participants will receive a specially minted Medal commemorating the Golden Jubilee of the Queen.

South of England AA Membership Scheme

SEAA propose to implement a Membership Scheme based on the system adopted by the North of England AA.   They believe that extra information is required about athletes so that further assistance can be given to Clubs, particularly associated with funding and sponsorship.   The information would also be used to assist Area and County Championship Secretaries.   Money raised through the scheme would also be used to support the Regional Development Co-ordinators.   Clubs would be required to submit details of members for inclusion in the overall Register.   A designated fee would be due from all active athletes ie those who compete and/or are in training.   Clubs would also continue to pay a Club Affiliation fee.   We await further details and will attend meetings on the subject.

Looking after yourself...

Sports Drinks
If you make up your own sports drink and don't use a proprietary brand (which normally contain some sodium), don't forget to add one fifth of a teaspoonful of salt to each litre of drink.   This actually aids re-hydration.

Distance Running
Distance running requires a very strong but flexible back.   The body becomes less supple generally as you grow older, and hamstrings shorten and tighten as you pound the pavement.   So don't forget to include some back strengthening exercises in your training, and just as importantly, some regular stretching exercises (perhaps yoga?).   Give the body a chance to maintain its natural level of movement and you will run faster and for longer.
