    Clubmark Scheme

Another two Workshops have been set-up at the University of Hertford which require attendance in July by committee members - one on Club Administration and one on Child Protection.   We believe that we have most of the requirements in place already but it is important that we understand exactly what is required of a Club in these two important areas.   Hopefully, Clubmark Accreditation will follow soon afterwards.

    Looking after yourself - Cross-Country

Start thinking about the cross-country season - it isn't far away.   Do you need a new pair of spikes? - they are often cheaper at this time of year.   Cross country was originally invented for track runners who could then keep fit during the winter months until the start of the next track season.   It is stamina building, rewarding, and great fun.   Start building a hill session into your training schedule, say once every two weeks.   This will stand you in good stead when the season starts in October.

Dorset Doddle Sunday 17th Augsut 2003

If there are any members who fancy a 32 mile walk/jog/run along the Dorset Coastal path from Weymouth and Swanage, they are welcome to join the 6 members who are already entered. It's a great weekend.

    Sandy 10

We are pleased to announce that the surplus money raised at this year's Sandy 10 mile road race, organised by the club, has amounted to £750.   We have decided to donate £550 to Save the Children and £200 to the NSPCC.   Thanks to all those club members who helped with the event, which has in turn enabled us to make these substantial donations.

    Eastern Young Athletes League
We had a very disappointing turn out at Huntingdon at the end of May, even the coaches were missing!   Our team was very small in numbers and were left at the bottom of the division but there were some very good performances.

The best performances came in the U13 boys age group where relative newcomers, Dean Bartlett (2nd 100m and 200m) and Roscoe Pibworth (1st discus, 2nd 400m and 3rd in the shot) scored the majority of the points.   First time competitor Lawrence Bruce was second in the B string shot and Nick Gilbert was 3rd in the 800m.   In the U15 girls Naomi Swales (hurdles, long jump and shot) scored heavily while Sammy Freeman threw 20.9 metres to finish second in the javelin with Holly Yates and Hayley Wright completing their team.   The U13 girls were represented by just Jennie Harris (1500m and long jump).

Things were put right in the following fixture at Bury St Edmonds - a much bigger and stronger team finished fourth, beating two much bigger clubs.

Highlights included Rachel Baust enjoying running (and winning) an 800m race, Lauren Ambrose getting so close to a PB and club record when grazing the bar at 1m 68cm and winning the hurdles by almost two clear flights.   Also little Chris Moore leading the charge for the line in the U13 100m.   It was very pleasing to see so many newcomers enjoying the competition.   It really was a very good day.

The next and last for this season is at Thurrock on July 27th.   It is bound to be affected by holidays but it is hoped that we can put out another strong team and show the rest of the league what we can do.
