Club Overseas Tour to REIMS, France:
    16th - 18th October

The destination for the club tour this year is Reims in France, where you have the choice of a Half Marathon or a 10K race.  There is also a Full Marathon if you feel the urge for a 26.2 mile run.  All races take place on the morning of Sunday 17th October, with the Half Marathon starting at 10:05 and the 10Km at 09:30.  Race entry is 15 Euro for the Half Marathon and 11 Euro for the 10Km.

The plan is to travel out to Reims by Minibus early on Saturday 16th, stay for two nights and return on Monday 18th.  We would like to have a firm idea of the numbers who wish to go by the END of JULY .  This will enable us to book the minibus(es), ferry crossing and accommodation.

Please let Nigel know as soon as possible if you would like you name(s) added to the list.

Run Rutland - Saturday 10th July

The largest man-made lake in western Europe, Rutland Water has something for everyone.  Built in the 1970's to supply water to the growing populations and industry in the East Midlands by utilising water from the lower reaches of the Nene and Welland, the attractive 3,100 acre reservoir has an international reputation for providing a balance of sport, leisure and wildlife conservation, and offers everyone the opportunity to try something new.

You can try energetic sports such as windsurfing, rock-climbing or canoeing, hire a dinghy, bicycle or fishing boat or relax by the water and watch the action - " but you don't want to do that!! You want to run round it!! That's what you want to do ".  If you are interested in running or cycling round it please meet at Sandy Upper School Car park at 10am.  For more information check out the Club website.  For further information and the distance around Rutland Water, we suggest checking out www.rutlandwater.net (it's a little further than Grafham!).

    New Athletic Track

The plans of the Track have been finalised and approved by UK:Athletics.  The tender process has been completed and the winning company appointed as the contractor (name yet to be declared).  Work on the site is to commence on 12th July and hopefully will be completed by the end of October.  The next meeting of the planning committee is to be held on 25th June, with the appointed contractors present.  It looks as if we are finally going to get a track, folks!

    Club 10km Championship
We had an excellent turnout for our 10km club championship, with 7 men and 4 ladies taking part.  Everyone finished with creditable times in the testing hot conditions.  Congratulations to Roger Wadeley and Karen Worrall who are our club champions for 2004, but also for their awards in the Beds County Championship.  Also well done to Tanya Tatchley on another significant improvement and new PB.

Eastern Young Athletes League   Cambridge, 20 June

The Club were rather a poor third behind Thurrock and Colchester and Tendering.  As always the problems were with who were not there rather than those that were.  It was particularly distressing for the team that several young athletes who had put their names down to compete simply did not turn up on the day.  This not only weakened the team but deprived others of the chance to compete.

Notable performances were a fine 800m by Lauren Gilbert (watch out brother !) and another huge PB for Chloe Best in the 1500m.  Nick Gilbert ran a very controlled 1500m winning in 4.50.3

Frankie Birch and Joe Goodyear continued their dominance in the discus with the two best throws while Sammy Freeman seems to be throwing PB's in the javelin in every competition that she does.

The Best brothers, Justin and Kieran were 1 & 2 in the triple jump while younger brother Connor picked up good points in the high jump, shot and long jump.

Best performance of the day (not by a Best) was Helen Brown's victory in the 70m hurdles in the UK grade II time of 12.8.

The next (and last) EYAL fixture for this season is at St Ives on the 25th July.  The coaches will be tearing their hair out if we cannot get something approaching a full team out for this one !
