All England Schools' Championships , Birmingham.
Congratulations to Matt Tunbull and Jorden Best, selected as part of the Bedfordshire and Luton Schools' team for the All England Schools' Championships. This competition is known as the mini Olympics, with tomorrow's internationals amongst the competitors. Also going to compete are Lauren Ambrose and Kay Brown who are 2nd claim members for Biggleswade - both Kay and Lauren were on the podium last year.
- late news - Jordan Best came 4th overall in combined events - further details next month
Southern Mens Luton 21st May
Biggleswade came 2nd out of 4 with 124 points, Met police were 1st with 130 points.
This position puts Biggleswade in equal 3rd place with Southend. Top 3 are promoted, Southend are the opposition on 25th June again at Luton.
In a match with the top 3 clubs in the league against each other, Biggleswade AC needed to win or come second to be get promotion at the end of the season
As the meeting progressed with the match scores being announced periodically, Biggleswade Athletic Club were keeping a fine margin in 1st position in front of Met Police, with Luton loosing ground in 3rd and London AC in distant 4th. Unfortunately for London AC members of their team were involved in a car accident on the way to Luton and suffered whiplash injuries so never made it.
With 3 events to go, Biggleswade had a 6 point advantage over Met Police. Because of this Roy and Tim volunteered for the steeple chase; Met police got 10 points , Biggleswade 8 points , advantage now 4 points. Before the steeplechase, Tim had 1 attempt in the Discus (no throw), Tim then returned to the Discus on round 6 (final round) all he had to do was plant one down the middle to get another 3 more throws there were only 7 in the competition so only 1 would be eliminated, unfortunately no throw, Biggleswade advantage now gone Met Police 10 points Biggleswade 4 points. In the final event 4 x 400 m Biggleswade had to win hoping that Met police would have a disaster, and finish last. In leg one David kept us in second place 1 stride behind Met Police, in the 2nd leg Ross attacked with 300 m to go and took a 5 yd advantage until the final 100 when Met Police had some reserve with Ross tiring, In the 3rd leg Craig's tactic, with his arm hurting, was to hold onto the Met police and attack in the last 50, giving Zack a chance over the final leg, which he did and so did Zack. Over the last 50 Zack was putting pressure on Met Police, but Met Police had just enough. In the end, Met Police were 1st and Biggleswade 2nd by a stride and breaking 4 mins for the first time in 3 years.

County Schools' Championships , 14th June
Many of our young athletes were at the Bedfordshire and Luton Schools' Championships, those with qualifying results would be considered for selection for the English Schools Championships (ESC) being held in Birmingham 7/8/9/ July.
In the Junior Boys category (U15's ) we had Matt Turnbull in the Shot and Discus, Jorden Best in the Hurdles and High Jump, Nick Gilbert in the 800 m. Matt won both Discus and Shot, putting him in a dilemma, you can only compete in one event in the ESC, and he qualified in both. - Matt has opted for the Shot. Jorden also had a dilemma, having jumped a PB in the high jump he was also wanted in the hurdles, having taken advice he left the hurdles. His second problem - he also had qualified in both events , Jorden has opted for the Hurdles. Nick was 4th in the 800 m close to his season's best. In the Intermediate Boys, Craig Morse also took the County Schools title in the Long Jump, but a little below par. Also in this age group was Charlie Jones in the Javelin where he took 3rd place only a little below the 1st and 2nd.
In the Junior Girls, we had Sophie Dyer in the Javelin. Sophie was a little below par and came 4th. In the Intermediate Girls age group (U17's), Frankie Birch was taking a welcome break from her GCSE exams and was up for revenge from the county Champs in May where she came 3rd in the hammer. This time Frankie was ecstatic with her victory and County Title and medal. Also in this age group was Alice Middleton in the 1500 m - Alice was just below the qualifying time before this race, so was planning an assault on the time. From the beginning Sarah Simpson a former national, regional and Inter counties champion over cross country took off leaving a large gap so Alice changed her tactics and stayed with the pack until a lap to go. Alice came home a comfortable second, but not the time she wanted. Also in this age group was Sammy Freeman, coming back after a layoff and Sammy once again showed her promise by winning in the javelin, with a distance that puts her as No. 1 in the county.
Eastern Young Athletes League St Ives 19th June
Biggleswade finished 6th out of 7 - the usual story plenty of good performances but far too many holes in the team. We had so few children that we only managed to finish one relay team out of the six age/gender categories. If we had not had six juniors from Riverside to join us, it would hardly have been worth going. It did clash with the Heart of the East and Fathers' day and it was extremely hot but we are struggling for numbers at the moment. The next round is in two weeks at Milton Keynes. Our chances of making a plate final this year look slim.
Conner Best had a good day, finishing 2nd in the long jump and high jump and 3rd in the hurdles.
Billy Balaam went one better by winning both the discus and shot. Thomas Bruce was 2nd in the B string for both. In the U15 age group, Matt Turnbull was close to a clean sweep in the throws, winning the discus and javelin but was 13 cm off the winning shot putt distance. Unusually, Jorden Best had to settle for two 3rd places, in the hurdles and high jump. Another not used to being beaten was Craig Morse (2nd triple jump, 3rd long jump and 4th 1500m).
The U13 girls had one winner, Jasmin Coughtrey in the shot, backed up by Katie Bland's 2nd in the discus with Chloe Best winning the B string. Laura Gilbert and Francesca Gray were 2nd and 3rd, respectively, in the 800m. The under 13 girls did manage to finish a relay team. The under 15 girls struggled for points and Hannah Hutchinson and Alice Gommershall (3rd A and 2nd B) in the 1500m scored three quarters of them. The under 17 girls were represented by stalwarts Frankie Birch (1st shot, 3rd B discus and 4th javelin) and Joe Goodyear (3rd shot, 3rd discus and 2nd B javelin).
