Regional Combined Events
The Club had two athletes representing Bedfordshire and Luton Schools at the regional combined events, Alice Middleton for 7 events and Helen Brown for 5 events.
Alice was against some seasoned multi event athletes, including some who have represented GB. She started with her weaker events, Hurdles and High Jump but ended the day on a high with a second place in the 200 m with a new PB and CR of 26.6 secs putting Alice in 4th place to start the next day (individual positions do not matter in combined events as points are gained for the performance).
On the second day Alice had an average Long Jump and below par Javelin. Her 800 m was ordinary but she came home over 80 m in front of the 2nd athlete who was the winner of the overall competition. This was only Alice's second multi events competition and she gets better results every time. Alice did not progress through to national finals as there were no teams so the first 3 go through as individuals
In the Junior Girls Pentathlon of the Regional schools combined events Helen was called up as a replacement in the county team. She held her own over all events and achieved a PB in the High Jump, and helped the county team to the 2nd team position against 7 other counties.
Helens first event was the 75 m hurdles, not her best performance but it was reasonable. 2nd event was the High Jump which allowed Helen to relax and produce a PB. The shot was not too great by her standards and her Long Jump was only average. In the final event, the 800 m, athletes are drawn in the heats depending on the placings going into the final event; Helen was in the first heat and therefore in the last 7 places but 800 m is a good event for her and she produced the 7th quickest time of all the girls, allowing Helen to finish 11th overall with a new PB and CR.
The Beds and Luton team were 2nd.

SEAA U20 and Senior Championships Crystal Palace, 17/18 June
Alice Middleton had entered 2 events the 400 m and the 800 m but with only 20 mins rest between heats opted for the 400 m, as this is an event that Alice has been selected to compete in the English Schools' Athletics Championships held at Gateshead 6/7/8 July representing Bedfordshire and Luton Schools. In the SEAA 400 m Alice was 5th in her heat and produced a PB and CR, and was only 4/100ths from getting into the final. A wonderful achievement for her first year competing as an U20.
Also competing in the SEAA Champs was Zack Morrison as senior Man in the High Jump. Zack took 3 attempts to open with 1.75 m and cleared it on his 3rd jump. Unfortunately Zack did not clear any more jumps but was still accredited with 9th place over all in the South of England Championships.
Alice's next event is the English Schools' Championships at Gateshead, and the Club wish Alice the very best of luck to compete in the 'mini-olympics' as it is known. From this event we will be seeing the next generation of Olympic British Athletes, and especially those destined for the 2012 Olympics at London.
