Queen's Jubilee Celebrations Races - 7:00pm Tuesday 4th June

As part of the Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations in Biggleswade, the club are hosting three Trail Races on the evening of Tuesday 4th June, starting at 7pm at Stratton School.   These races are part of the many events being coordinated by Biggleswade Town Council during Jubilee Week.

There are three races, for different age groups, and every finisher will receive a commemorative Golden Jubilee medal.   The race routes use the network of footpaths starting at the end of Eagle Farm Road, and going out towards Dunton.

The three races are as follows:

Race  Age  Start
Time
  Entry
Fee
1 Mile Trail Run  9 and over  7 pm  £1
4.5 Km Trail Run  13 and over  7:15 pm  £1
5 Mile Trail Race  16 and over  7:30 pm  £2

Please come along and take part in these races.

Sports Day at Fairfield - 13th July

Des Ball and Richard Glover are in the process of organising this event which will comprise a full athletics meeting along with Cycle Races, at Fairfeld in Biggleswade.   Any help on the day would be appreciated by the organisers.   Please let Des know on 01767-313790 if you can help.

Navigators Way training Runs

The first of our club night training runs around the Navigators Way on 14th May was very well attended with 13 club members (and Amber the dog) taking part.   Most of the runners (excluding Amber) retired to the Brewery Tap after the run, which was most impressive.

The next Navigators Way run is planned for Tuesday 18th June, and provisionally Tuesday 16th July.   Meet at 7pm on the River Bridge.

If anyone has another off-road 5 to 7 mile route that they think is suitable for a Tuesday night club run (preferably with a Pub near the finish), please let Nigel know (01767 682251).

The Summer and our Skin

Don't forget that the radiation we receive from the sun is increasing day by day at the moment.   To help protect the skin from some very nasty conditions, it is very important to rub in some suitable sunscreen product before going out for a run, especially people who are fair-skinned, even on a cloudy day.   Wearing sunscreen does not impair the body's ability to dissipate heat.

Green Tea

It has been reported that Green Tea is good for joints and may help to prevent cartilage breakdown.   The catechins within the tea (if the tea is drunk before and during a meal containing starches and fats) is also an effective way of regulating blood sugar, cholesterol, and fat.   I'm not sure that it tastes as good as a cup of Earl Grey though!

Members' Record Times

Here are the times that we are aware of for the Half-Marathon, 20 Mile, and Marathon Race distances - many thanks for the information so far received.   Keep those results coming - there must be many more, considering the size of our Club.   We will publish further details and other distances in future Newsletters.

Dorset Doddle - Sunday 18th August 2002

It is now only about 10 weeks to this year's Dorset Doddle, and we already have 5 definite entries from the club, with another 4 or 5 threatening to enter.   The Doddle is a 32 mile "stroll" along the Dorset Coastal path from Weymouth to Swanage, and in recent years it has become a very popular weekend for runners and their partners.   The run takes up most of Sunday, so we walk, eat and drink on Saturday in preparation.

If you fancy a weekend away in beautiful Dorset, let Nigel or Stuart know and we will handle your entry (£3.50 entry fee, plus £3 for the coach fare to get you to Weymouth on Sunday morning) and help you find accommodation.

Sandy 10 Road Race

The Sandy 10 organising committee would like to thank everyone who helped with this year's event.   With almost 400 finishers in the 10 mile race and 2 mile Fun Run, the event was once again a resounding success, with many of our own club members running personal best times.

Special congratulations to James, Chris and Jonathon Drinkwater for their family treble in the 2 mile Fun Run, to our Ladies team who came 2nd team in the 10 mile race, and to Gavin for finishing in the top 10.
