Newsletter - How Do You Like Yours ?

With the club growing exponentially, the production and distribution of the paper monthly Newsletter is becoming an increasingly arduous task, apart from using a number of trees.  We still wish to produce the newsletter on a monthly basis, but we would like everyone who has an email address to receive the Newsletter by email, rather than a paper copy? If this is not convenient for you, and you would still prefer to receive a paper copy, then please let Nigel or Stuart know.

    The World's Greatest Runner ?

Ken Prior make the case for his choice for the world's greatest runner.  Does anybody have any other ideas?

Michael Johnson?  Roger Bannister?  Haile Gebresallasie?  Seb Coe?  All brilliant runners but they did not dominate their contemporaries like my nomination.  He gets my vote, not for the phenomenal distances that he runs but for the incredible margins by which he wins.  His name ?  Yiannis Kouros.

Hardly a household name , but he should be.  This Greek born Australian is an ultra distance runner the like of which the world has never seen.  He holds the record for running 1000 miles in 10 days and 10 hours.  The next best, by anyone, is 11 days and 13 hours.  OK, so 1000 mile races are not run very often but he also holds the world's best for the distance run in 24 hours at 303 km.  At least half a dozen of these are run every year and the next best by anyone, ever, is 276 km, a distance that Kouros has beaten 13 times.

If you scaled this margin down to a 100m race, he would be nearly a whole second better than anyone else and as improvements in this record are usually measured in hundreth's of a second you can see what an amazing feat this is.  Yiannis Kouros - runner par excellence. You now have one answer to the prize quiz on the web-site forum.

    Club Overseas Tour: 16th - 18th October

We have now decided that the destination will be either the Rheims (France) 1/2 Marathon and 10K races, or the Amsterdam (Holland) 1/2 marathon and 10K races.  Both events are scheduled for Sunday 17th October 2004.  So far, feedback from our members has put Rheims slightly in the lead, but we are still open to your preference.

The plan is to travel out on Saturday 16th October, stay for two nights and return on Monday 18th Oct, so you will need to organise the Monday off work! If we go to Rheims we can travel by Minibus and/or cars.  If we go to Amsterdam we would probably have to fly, but Easyjet from Luton is quite cheap providing we book flights well in advance.

If you are interested in the Tour, then please let Nigel know.  Although October is still 5 months away, we will need to book our accommodation as soon as possible before it all goes.

    The Tuesday Night Programme

Jun 1   Speed work with Steve.
      Jun 8   Hazels Hedge Run.
Jun 15   Fartlek in the sun.
      Jun 22   RSPB circuit.
Jun 29   Away day (Destination to be arranged)

All feedback is greatly appreciated. Please speak to Gavin or anyone on the committee. Also any ideas you would like incorporated into the programme please let them know.

    Sandy 10 Race Donation
£800 to Macmillan Cancer Relief (Bedford Appeal)

This year's Sandy 10 race has raised £800.00 to give to our chosen charity - Macmillan Cancer Relief - Bedford Appeal.  This is a tremendous effort by all.  The cheque will be presented to the Bedford representative of the charity on Tuesday 1st June before training at Sandy Upper School.
