    The Track

Those of you who are able to attend club nights at Sandy Upper School can't have failed to notice the new track gradually taking shape.

For those of you who have not seen it, everything appears to be going to schedule; from the progress meeting on Friday 27th May at Sandy school, the developers are on schedule for construction completion by 12th August.  David Young rejected the original plans because the Hammer/Discus cage was in the corner (adjacent to the 1500m start) - although this is common on most tracks new specifications this year insist that the cage is central to the field .  The Hammer cage is now on the north side with the Pole Vault and High Jump fan now on the south side.  The Long Jump pit will only have one pit and not two as desired.  The latest spec insists that the run up is 53 m long, this would have the second pit to be in the 'air' as the land drops away close to the classroom of the future and health and safety would not allow this.  As compensation the Triple Jump will have 7/9/11 and 13 m boards, the 7 m board is additional.

The only problems but will not slow the construction is the power and water supply.  Power for the floodlights may require a substation to be built.  The current supply available is 100 amps and the government department believes that 200 amps will be needed.  Alternative power supply is being sought.  The water supply for the Steeplechase is being looked at, a hydrant that was going to be tapped for supply is dry!!?

Paula Radcliff is still being sought after for the grand opening between 12th 26th September.  Biggleswade AC to investigate.  We are considering holding an athletics meeting to mark the event with, perhaps, a 12 hour race to follow.

    Unattached Running Levy - Increase

You may have read that a resolution was passed at the AGM of the South of England Athletic Association stipulating the Unattached Running Levy be increased from £1 to £2, even more reason for runners to join a club like ours.  The increase becomes effective from 1st October 2005 but will not affect races for which permits have already been granted.  All events after 1st January 2006 will have to charge the increased the levy.  It has been stated that the money will be ring-fenced for use by road running (development, coarse measurement, safety and risk assessment awareness etc.) but there are a lot of people who have put pen to paper recently who are very sceptical of the, in percentage terms, massive increase.  Part of the money will still be fed back to the County Associations.

    Sandy 10 - Charity Presentations

The presentation of two cheques for £600.00 each, to the East Anglian Air Ambulance and the Children's Liver Disease Foundation, took place on 24th May at Sandy Sports Centre.  Glynis Hanlon accepted the cheque for the EAAA and she thanked Biggleswade AC for their very generous support of their organisation.  The cheque for the CLDF was presented to Steve, Karen and Andrew Worrall on behalf of the CLDF.  Steve and Karen were very grateful for the money raised by the Sandy 10 for an organisation that is working hard to help children, like Andrew, who are born with Liver problems.

Kingfisher Way - Sunday 17th July (provisional)

Our summer jaunt along the Kingfisher Way (21 miles from Baldock to Tempsford along the banks of the River Ivel) is planned for Sunday 17th July.  If you would like to come along for either the whole distance, or for part of the route, please contact Nigel Bush.

Everton Fun Day 3 Mile Trail Run
    11th June, at 10.30am

The Everton Fun Day 3 Mile Trail Run is now entering its 3rd year. This is a low key event for runners and joggers, run on traffic free roads and trails along the Greensand Ridge Walk, north of Everton. This year's event is on Saturday 11th June at 10:30am.

Last year Biggleswade AC runners claimed 1st Male (Gavin), 1st Female (Zoe) and 1st Junior Female (Steph Bruce) - so we hope you will all come along to defend your titles - no pressure!

    Entry forms from Nigel Bush

Overseas Tour to the French Pyrenees
    20th to 23rd May

    A report from Giles Keen...

Eleven club members and their partners flew to Perpignan at the end of May for the third overseas tour.  The destination was Font Romeu, Paula's European high altitude training base in the French Pyrenees.

The weather defied forecasts with a weekend of blazing sun, punctuated only by the passing edge of a storm on the final evening.  Not a minute was wasted over the course of a very active and varied weekend.  Early Saturday morning was devoted to a challenging training run around the extremely hilly countryside near the accommodation.  After a short rest, we set off for a walk to a mountain lake, Lac des Bouillouses, near the Carlit Massif.  The 17 mile amble up to an altitude of 2100m brought us wonderful and varied scenery, and the spectacle of Nigel & Jan F both plunging unexpectedly through 2 feet of snow.  On seeing a small iceberg in the lake, Zoë decided that she wasn't going to bother with a paddle after all.

On Sunday another training run was followed by a trip on the mountain railway "le train jaune" to the town of Bourg-Madame on the Franco-Spanish border.  After a short walk across the border we enjoyed tapas and beer in a square in the Spanish town of Puigcerda, whilst topping up our sunburn.  On the journey back to Font Romeu, the men and the ladies split, the ladies sensibly returning to our base, the blokes deciding that it would be fun to try and outrun a rapidly approaching storm on a 10k walk across the hills back to the town.

The evenings were spent enjoying the local restaurants and bars.  The local casino was brought to its knees when Martin won a staggering 13 euros!

A fantastic time was had by all.  Special thanks to Nigel who masterminded the weekend and ensured it all went smoothly, and to Ken for finding the accommodation in the first place.  Thanks also to Jan B & Lyn for their company and for very kindly ensuring we had supplies for breakfast and lunch.
