AGM and Subscriptions

The AGM of the Club was held on 15th April in the Main Lecture Hall at Sandy Upper School, with 18 members present, somewhat down on last year's figure, but still very good for a club our size. s to those who turned up and contributed to a successful meeting.  We have decided this year to publish the minutes of the AGM on the website even though officially they will not have been ratified until the next AGM - keep an eye open on the website for details.

Annual Club Subscriptions - 2009
The subject was officially discussed at the AGM and following an interesting debate it was decided to raise the annual cost of Senior Membership from £15 to £17; the cost of Junior Membership was maintained at £7.  However, on top of this will be added the cost of affiliating each athlete to England Athletics, currently £5 per annum.  Unless EA raise this sum next year, club membership in 2009 will therefore be £22 for seniors and £12 for juniors (and those in full-time education).

The date of the next AGM has, for several reasons, been brought forward in the year. The meeting has been set for Tuesday 17th February 2009 - put it in your diaries.

Coaching by Graham Bufton

All at Biggleswade AC would like to welcome Graham Bufton onto the coaching team.  Graham has years of experience in both aspects of pain - giving and taking away!  We hope he enjoys his time with us.  To read more about his training sessions check out the "training page" of the website.

Biggleswade AC Five-a-side (7 Jun)

Yet again we are putting teams into the Everton Fun Day Five-a-side competition.  We hope to field 2 men's teams and 1 ladies team.  The event is to be held on Saturday 7th June (in the afternoon after the 3 mile fun run).  If you would like to play please just turn up or place your name on the forum.

Lucozade Visits

Lucozade will be visiting us twice over the next coming months.  They will be here to offer advice on body mass index, running nutrition and offering free samples of their goods.  So whether you're a senior, vet or junior, sprinter, jogger, thrower or jumper feel free to have a chat with them.  The Lucozade truck will be parked next to the track (check out the senior training page for the exact dates).

Membership

There are now 85 paid up senior, and 45 paid up junior, members of the club; very definitely an all-time record for this time of year.

Affiliation to England Athletics

The EA Club Portal is now live so the names of all first-claim members will be added to the database and the individual £5 payments made.  If all goes to plan members should be receiving their Competition Licences within the next month or so.  Unfortunately, the system failed miserably last year but hopefully EA are better geared up now.

The Athletes Portal has been created so that the club can load overall membership data, but athletes will also be able to update their own personal information using an individual password.  Details should be sent to you by EA.

Track Administration

Following a meeting held with Stevenage Leisure it has been agreed that the club will continue to operate the Track Pass system and the ad-hoc payments (Track Subs.).  We have decided, for this year, to maintain the existing prices:
Senior Track Pass (annual)  - £55
Junior Track Pass (annual)  - £27.50
Senior "Pay as you go"  - £2.50 per session
Junior "Pay as you go"  - £1.50 per session

Icknield Way Run - 24-26 May

Ken has sent us his "Icknield Way Diary"...

Saturday 8.15 am

Assemble in the car park at Ivinghoe Beacon.  Realise that we have to go half a mile uphill to the start.  Lots of nervous peeing behind bushes.  Arrange our drinks and give food and extra clothes to Damo and Nat.  Peter there to see us off.
Pose for picture in the car park and walk up to the beacon.  Very blowy but fantastic view.  Pick up a stone each to be dropped in Thetford.  One more picture and at 8.30 am we are off.
Nearly miss the first turn but Nat and Molly point us in the right direction.

9.30 am
Have made it off the downs and negotiated our way around Whipsnade Zoo with little problem so far.

10.30am
Wandering around a big field like a lost tribe.  Our path was head high in nettles so we diverted and got lost.  Already half an hour late picking up Fi at Chalk hill.  Gav, bless his cotton socks, works out that we are standing on the path that we are looking for and leads us out of the field, up some hidden steps to where Robin, Fi, Damo, Nat and Molly are waiting for us.  Gav awarded 10 brownie points.

12.15 pm.
Having made it as far as the approach to Sharpenhoe Clappers and our lunch stop we are feeling quite good.  The advance guard of Rob, Simon, Fi , Derek and Ken are met by Damo, Nat , Molly and Robin.  Gav.  Paula and Roger were just behind us as we started the climb up towards the Clappers so we wait.  After 10 minutes a phone call to Gav indicates they are just below us so we go to the car park and start lunch.  20 minutes later another phone call suggests that they have hit the road so less than a minute away.  10 minutes later reveals that they are in Harlington ! We finish lunch and head for Streatley.  Damo goes to fetch others, Gav stripped of his brownie points.

2pm
Gang reunited at Streatley Church.  Damo nearly gets married as we get caught up in a wedding party.

3pm
Grinding our way up Telegraph Hill.  We all walk the steep climb except Roger who celebrates by downing a pint in Pirton.

4 pm
Reach the outskirts of Hitchin and into Ickleford.  Coming up to 30 miles and all still going strong.

4.45 pm
Getting close to the day's finish (Baldock Tescos).  Roger, Fi and Rob forge ahead.
Roger, Rob and Fi miss a turn and a bridge and get caught on wrong side of A1.

5.10pm
Simon and Derek finish to be greeted by Robin, Damo, Nat and Molly.  Ken gets cramp 100 metres from finish and is unable to move for several minutes.  Still finishes several minutes in front of Roger, Rob and Fi.  Fi pleased to have got lost as she has just completed 26.2 miles instead of the intended 25.  Gav and Paula arrive soon after.

10pm.
Simon and Derek asleep (not together).  Rest making a subdued appearance at Nigel's party , except Roger who is dancing like a lunatic.

Sunday 8 am
Everyone arrives at Tescos except Paula.  Blisters have forced an early retirement.  Met by Ian Skerratt who has run there from Clifton.  Peter there to see us off again.  Set off 10 minutes late in heavy rain.

8.30 am
Dave Lyons arrives at Tescos to find us gone.

9.30 am
Dave Lyons meets us at Wallington.  Still raining heavily.

9.45 am
Still wandering around Wallington trying to find the path out.  Gav regains some points by finding it.  Rog celebrates by running up a steep hill.  Gav starts to limp.

10.30 am
Still raining.  Running out of Royston to be met by support crew.  Roger about 10 minutes off the back.

11.15 am
50 miles up, Gav limping worse, no sign of Roger.  Looking forward to getting out of the rain.

Midday.
Reach Heydon.  Paula picks Gav up.  All sad to lose him.  Quiet run to Chrishall for lunch stop.  All soaked and frozen.  Ian has his first (and only) drink since leaving Baldock but refuses food.  Rest of us have soup.

2.15pm
We have restarted.  No sign of Roger.

2.30pm
Reached Elmdon (55m).  Unknowingly pass Roger in pub who is too cold to go on.  Rog on his second pint.  Rain eases at last.

3.00pm
Cross briefly into Essex.  Simon, Rob and Ian pull away.

4pm
Pass Linton Zoo.  See Damo, Nat and Molly.  Rob, Simon and Ian 15 minutes ahead.

5pm
68 miles done.  Meet a 4 x 4 stuck in mud.  Driver asks if we can push him !

5.02pm
4 x 4 still stuck in mud.  Lead group reaches Balsham village and are ferried to Zoe and Pat's.

5.40pm
Ken and Derek finish too.

5.50 pm
Arrive at the field hospital (Z&P's) for emergency treatment (tea, shower and sympathy).  Jen, Linds and Debs there to greet us.  Rob has a painful hard lump on his shin which does not look good.  Ken shocked by state of right foot.  Covers what he can with Compeed and resolves not to look again.  Derek in too much pain to know what hurts the most.

11.30pm
Having devoured fantastic bbq and been spoiled rotten, runners keep hosts up to watch end of Bond movie.  Asleep 10 minutes later.

Monday 8 am
Met at Balsham village by Lee and Steve.  Only raining slightly.  Zoe comes to run with us too.  Peter there again to see us off (what a star).

8.45am
Rob and Simon miss path and take a longer road route.  Lee and Steve come back to warn us.  Derek suffering terribly.

9.15 am
Derek has to accept that he is not going to make it.  Peter takes him home.
Simon and Rob back on route and in front.  Rest of us spend 10 minutes trying to find a kissing gate.

9.30 am
Lee, Steve and Zoe pace Ken to try and catch Rob and Simon.

10.00 am
Lee and Steve set off to try and find their way back to Balsham.

10.30 am
Zoe has led Ken back to 10 mins behind Rob and Simon and phones for a pick up.  Meet Damo, Nat and Molly in Cheveley.  Over 80 miles done.

12.30 am
All arrive at Tuddenham within a few minutes of each other for lunch (Rob and Simon had missed another path).  92 miles done.  Ken picks up food, drink and Robin and carries on.  Simon and Rob stop for soup.  Raining heavily again.

2.30 pm.
Simon and Rob catch Ken and Robin.

4 pm
Less than 6 miles to go.  Rob and Simon only just in front but starting to run away.

4.50pm
Lost on Barnhamcross Common.  Eventually reach road and 'Welcome to Thetford ' sign.  Robin doing all the navigating.  Ken too tired to think.

5.10 pm
Rob and Simon reach Thetford Railway station to be greeted by Damo, Nat, Molly, Gav and Paula, Zoe and Pat.

5.30pm
Ken and Robin reach end too to be greeted by the above and a pint of beer.
All adjourn to the Railway Arms.

106 miles , 6 counties, 3 days.

The runners all wish to thank Damo, Nat (and Molly) for their logistical and moral support on route, without which we could not have started.  Zoe and Pat for the most fantastic food and hospitality without which we would not have finished.  To all those others that saw us through, Lee and Steve, Ian, Robin and Fi, Debs and Linds, Dave and Peter, sincere thanks.  It really was a team effort.

Club Tour - Derbyshire Peak District 10th to 13th October 2008

The club tour will return to the Derbyshire Peak District this year, to arwin Lakes, just outside Matlock, for a long weekend starting Friday 10th October, and returning on Monday 13th October.  We stay in very well appointed cottages, each sleeping 6.

The cottages at Dawin Lakes have now been booked, and to date we have 33 club members and partners going, compared to 24 last year!  There are more cottages available on the complex at Darwin Lakes, and so it is still not too late to join the "tour", but please decide as soon as possible if you are interested.  See the Forum or contact Nigel (01767 682251).  Details for Darwin Lakes can be found at www.darwin-lakes.co.uk

How Nigel Bush celebrated his 60th birthday in Cape Wrath

Back in 2001 I read about a new running challenge to be held in Cape Wrath in Scotland, consisting of a week long series of races of varying difficulty and terrain.  I decided that I would do it one day!  Then last year, Chris Clarke suggested we do it.  I couldn't get the time off work, but Stuart accompanied Chris to the week long event, and they both came home enthused by the challenge and the local community.  I therefore decided to put it off no longer, and when I saw that my 60th Birthday coincided with the 2008 event, I entered straight away and started to plan the week with Chris.  What better way to spend your 60th birthday than running in stunning mountainous scenery with a load of running nutters, whilst enjoying the superb local community spirit!

Chris and I left Bedfordshire on Sat 10th May and headed north.  After a brief stopover in Edinburgh to meet up with my son Peter and his wife, we headed north once more for our overnight stop in Kinross.  On Sunday morning we hit the road again and once we passed Inverness I was in new territory.  The100 mile journey across Sutherland to Durness was a shear delight, with no traffic, and numerous stops to take photos of the mountains and quiet lochs.  We finally arrived in Durness (our base for the week) at about 3pm.  Our first mission was to find our B&B lady Heather, who was working at the local "Cocoa Mountain" chocolate factory.  Needless to say this was the first of many visits to sample their large cups of hot chocolate - essential nourishment when you are running every day!  As per normal in these parts of Scotland, Heather said "let yourself in to the B&B, it is never locked, and make yourselves at home".

We awoke on Monday morning to bright sunshine and blue skies, which continued throughout the week - who says it always rains in Scotland?  On our arrival at the Challenge HQ (the local village hall) Chris introduced me to the event organizers and all the returning runners.  It is a feature of this unique event that about 70% of the runners return every year.  Chris and I decided to run the 10K race, as my very limited training meant a Half-Marathon was not a good idea on day one.  We were bussed out to the race start along the beautiful shore of Loch Eribol, and then the gun went.  Chris and I ran together for most of the way, but over the final 2 miles I could feel my competitive instincts returning after an absence of 4 months with injury, and I just managed to hold off Chris at the finish.  He was not pleased!

On Monday afternoon we joined the local Ranger, Donald, for a nature walk to Faraid Head (arranged by the Challenge committee) to watch Puffins, and this proved to be a very informative and spectacular walk.

Tuesday morning once again dawned bright and sunny, and after our obligatory breakfast of traditional Scottish porridge, we set off for the Hill race.  I was not looking forward to this, and Chris duly got his own back by finishing about a minute in front of me.  In the afternoon we decided to travel the 25 miles by car to Loch Hope and climb the most northerly Munro (over 3000ft) on the UK mainland - Ben Hope.  This was a fantastic climb, with stupendous views south to the huge Sutherland mountains, and north to the coastline, with good views of Tongue, the Orkneys and the decommissioned Dounreay Power station.  One surprising view on the summit was the sight of a climber, laying outside his tent in just his shorts, quietly reading and sunbathing!  On the way down we were both wondering whether the extra exertion of the climb was going to affect our efforts in the race the next day.  In the evening, a Pub Quiz was organized for the runners and locals, and our team of 5 (including some very intelligent RAF personnel) managed a creditable 5th place out of 23 teams.

Wednesday morning was the BIG day for me (my 60th) and I could not have had a more enjoyable run.  The Round Durness 8.4 mile race had a bit of everything ....  undulating roads leading to the Kyle of Durness, testing moorland tracks, the 9-hole golf course, Balnakiel beach and sand dunes, then back to Durness and the fantastic support from the local school children, and the final 1 in 4 climb to the finish.  My plan was to keep Chris in sight all the way, and I just managed to keep the pressure on him.  We finished 24 seconds apart and both were very happy with our efforts.  In the afternoon a trip was arranged to visit a local sheep farm where we were treated to the hand shearing of a large ram, and a sheep dog trial demonstration.  But this was not the end of an eventful day.  In the evening about 60 runners and 20 locals gathered in the Village Hall for 90 "non-stop" minutes of Scottish Country Dancing practice, ready for the Ceilidh on Saturday.  I went to bed exhausted, after a few drams to celebrate my birthday.

Thursday morning's race consisted of running "about" 3 miles along Balnakiel Beach and sand dunes, without a watch, and trying to finish as close to your predicted time as possible.  Needless to say, Chris had a distinct advantage as he had taken part the previous year.  But he was still not good enough to beat the winner who finished within 10 seconds of his predicted time!  On a beautiful sunny Thursday evening, we returned to Balnakiel Beach for the BBQ, and everyone enjoyed the stunning sunset, camp fire and Spooky Walk in the ancient graveyard.

Friday was a rest day, so Chris and I decided to visit the famous Cape Wrath lighthouse, which also enabled us to familiarize ourselves with Saturday's "marathon" course.  To get to the lighthouse, you must first cross the Kyle of Durness in the smallest passenger ferry in Britain - a small open boat that carries 12 people.  The ferryman has been operating this trip for over 20 years, so we felt quite safe in his hands.  On the far side, a small minibus took us along the 11 mile undulating bumpy road to the lighthouse, designed and built in 1828 by Robert Stevenson.  The Cape Wrath peninsula is a quite remarkable area devoid of all habitation.  The lighthouse was automated 10 years ago, and the only visitors are hardy tourists and (once a year) the Cape Wrath Challenge Marathoners!  The views from this far north westerly tip of the UK mainland were breathtaking.

Saturday's race involved some very complicated logistical challenges for the organizers as there was not only a full marathon to organise, but also 2-man, 3-man and 5-man relays.  The Marathon route starts on the "Cape Side" (far side) of the Kyle, and runs out to the lighthouse (11 miles).  The runners than retrace their steps back to the ferry (another 11 miles), where the clocks are stopped.  Within minutes, the runners are ferried across the Kyle to the Durness side, where the clocks are restarted for the final 4 mile run to the finish in Durness.  For those running the full marathon, a 5 to 10 minute stop at 22 miles, and stepping into and out of a rocking boat, is a challenge in itself!  Chris and I opted for the 2-man relay.  This involved Chris getting the transport at 6am from the Village Hall, ready for the long trip to the lighthouse, which was his starting point.  He then ran the 11 miles back to the ferry, crossed the Kyle in the boat, and then ran the final 4 miles to Durness.  My start time was not until 8.00am, and once across the Kyle ferry, a group of us (running the 2-man relay) set off up a very steep hill heading for the lighthouse, 11 miles away.  As Chris had set off before me, we actually passed each other after I had run 2 miles.  The organizers had the job of adding up our individual times later!  The route to the lighthouse was very undulating, but the scenery and local wildlife kept the spirits up.  Finally, after passing 11 ancient granite mile posts, the lighthouse came into view, and the welcome finish point for me.  But this was where the real challenge began!  Owing to the very narrow lighthouse road, the limited transport (2 minibuses) and 200 runners of all abilities setting off at different times, there was NO transport back to the ferry for 2 1/2 hours!  So we all decided to walk the 11 miles back to the ferry to avoid stiffening up and to support the many runners still completing their challenge.  By the time I arrived back in Durness (about 2pm), Chris was showered, changed and had had some food!  But this all added to the unique character of the event.

In the evening, the organisers laid on a superb meal (with every delicacy you can imagine including crab and giant prawns), followed by the trophy presentations and finally the ceilidh, which went on until well after midnight.  We were both very surprised when our names were read out as winning two beautiful glass bowls for 3rd place in the 2-man relay, and this gave us an ideal excuse to open yet another bottle of wine to celebrate.

The Cape Wrath Challenge is quite unique.  The week long set of races offers its own challenge over some very varied and beautiful terrain.  But the thing that makes the event so special are the social activities laid on for all the runners, the support given by the local community and the friendliness of the locals.  Chris and I have already booked our places for next year.  So if anyone else is interested, take a look at their web site www.capewrathchallenge.co.uk for more information.  If you follow the link to the photos of this year's event, the pictures will clearly demonstrate the stunning scenery and the enjoyment on everyone's faces.

On Sunday morning, after our final breakfast of porridge and scrambled eggs, we said our goodbyes to Heather (having booked our room for next year) and headed south.  Eleven hours later we arrived home to a very flat Bedfordshire.
