  NEWS   FOR
YOUNG   ATHLETES

Sandy 10 and 2 Mile Fun Run

As you are no doubt aware the Club organises this race on an annual basis and it has become a very popular event again after Paul Tomlin had put so much energy into setting it up 20 years ago.   This year we have switched the headquarters to Sandy Upper School because of the increased number of athletes entering - we are likely to have between 350 and 400 taking part.   The Sandy Scout hut had served the race very well for many years and we thank the Scouts for their past support, but unfortunately their premises are now too small.

In order to present the race as a professional event, and to meet the safety regulations that now govern road racing, we will be looking for more marshals and officials this year.   We have decided therefore to ask you, in the first instance, whether you would be prepared be an official or marshal, and only run the race if you are able to find a suitable, willing, helper (non-member) to act in your place.

We hope you understand the situation but we are a small club and we want to see the Sandy 10 established as a first rate event to which people will want to return year after year.   You will find it great fun and rewarding to help other runners enjoy a well staged race.   If you can help please let Nigel Bush know on 01767-682251.   We already have over 50 registered entrants.

... and German Visitors ...
This year we have 9 friends from Erlensee in Germany coming over to run the Sandy 10 and stay the weekend with us.   We are still looking for accommodation for one of the runners.   If you can help out, Stuart Galloway would love to hear from you.   It would mean providing bed and breakfast for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night.   All the runners will be fully occupied over the three days and during the evenings.   The programme will be announced shortly to interested parties.

Le Touquet weekend 4th-6th July

We have a total of 15 people travelling on this trip, for the 10km and 20km races.   A Minibus has been booked, and Nigel is now looking into best value Channel Crossings (anyone got a big raft?).   He will be contacting all travellers soon to seek accommodation requirements.   For those who plan to enter one of the two races, the cost is 8 Euros pre-booked, or 10 Euros "on the day".   Nigel is currently trying to find out how we pay for a pre-entry.

Annual Subscriptions

Many thanks to those of you who have rejoined the Club.   However, there are a few people who have still not done so - we don't want to lose you so please send your subscription as soon as possible.   There are considerable advantages in remaining a member of an affiliated Club, one being that you don't have to pay the £1 SEAA levy when you enter races.

The annual cost of membership is £5 if you are under 17 or still at school, and £12 for all others.   Full family membership is £25 and up to three youngsters in one family may join for £12.   Please make payment to Chris Clarke, Stuart Galloway, or any Committee member.   Cheques should be made payable to "Biggleswade AC".   If you wish to resign from the Club please do so in writing.

Annual General Meeting - Tuesday 25th March 2003
8pm Purcell Room, Weatherly Centre

(next to the Biggleswade Recreation Centre and Stratton School)

This is an important part of the communication process between members and the committee - come and make your views known.

  1. Written nominations for the posts of Officers on the Committee, which take precedence over nominations on the evening, must be received by the Secretary no later than 18th March and must be seconded by another member of the Club.
  2. Any member over 17 may request that an item for discussion be added to the Agenda but details must be received by the Secretary in writing by 4th March.   There will be no Agenda Item of "Any Other Business".
  3. Only paid-up members over the age of 17 may vote at the AGM, or hold a place on any Committee.
  4. A copy of the Agenda will be sent to all members by 11th March and a copy of the Minutes of the previous AGM held on 26th March 2002 will be available to members at the meeting, before the start.   If you wish to have a copy beforehand please advise the Secretary by 4th March.

Schools' Cross-Country Relays
Rowney Warren, Tues 18 Mar, at 4:20pm

The Club is organising this competition - we have entries from over a dozen schools making up nearly 60 teams, and there is still some time before the closing date.   The competition starts at 4.20pm and we need more marshals than we have got.   If you can get there to help then please see Ken Prior or David Brown as soon as possible.

Coaches needed

We ALWAYS need more coaches.   No previous knowledge or ability is assumed and the club will pay most of the cost.   Ken has a list of coaching courses available so see him NOW.

New Members

Welcome to the following new members who have recently joined the Club:
Andrew Bruce   who lives in Tempsford
  Anthony Haymes   in Blunham
  Adam Pittard   in Sandy
Best of luck in your athletics fellas!

Empty Inkjet Cartridges

We can make a bit of money for the Club by recycling used inkjet cartridges (all types except Epson).   Please hand in your used cartridges to any committee member.   This will also help the environment.

The first fixture is at HOME (well, Bedford actually but we are the host club and we need to supply officials and helpers) on Sunday April 27th.   Ken and David will be badgering parents and club members to help.   Please help them by volunteering first!

The competition is open to all juniors between 11 and 17 years old (on August 31st 2003).   But you must be a paid up club member (£5 pa) and wear club kit (available from Sporstscene in Biggleswade).   We need as many as possible.   We still have never managed a full team, we would probably win if we did.

Other venues have yet to be arranged but keep these dates free:
        Apr 27 (Bedford)   -   May 25   -   June 22   -   July 27

  • Ron Pickering Memorial Fund
Lauren Ambrose was the only successful applicant from the Club to receive funds from this fund, which is shared annually by young athletes who have achieved a certain standard, competed for their County, and show promising potential (youngest age group U15).   Well done Lauren and lets get more of our youngsters into the fund.
