Summer BBQ (and Kingfisher Way Run)

As a thank you to all who helped with this year's Sandy 10 road race, we are once again holding a "FREE" Summer BBQ.  The proposed date is Sunday 12th July, and the venue is Bedford Road, Sandy by kind permission of Susan and David Sutton - and Damien.  Look out for more details later.

The Kingfisher Way run "Summer edition" will probably take place on the morning of the same day.

    Club 10k Championships

The Flitwick 10k race on 19th April was also the Club 10k Championship Race, and this year's Club Champions, based on age-graded times, are Vince Plosky and Juliet Nayler.  Details of the age-graded results can be found here.

    Membership

Many thanks to those of you that have re-joined the club in 2009.  Our senior membership now stands at 81 although there would seem to be about 30 people who have not re-joined from last year.  If you are one of those, and still wish to remain a member, then please pay your annual subscription as soon as possible.

    Affiliations

The Club has again affiliated to UK:Athletics, the Association of Running Clubs, the South of England Athletic Association, and the Bedfordshire AAA.  The process of affiliating members through the UK:A database will take place in early May, so if you wish to have your Competition Licence renewed then it is vital that you pay your annual subscription in the very near future, if you have not already done so.

    Newsletter Developments

The Club Website, so ably administered by Tim Huxtable, has now been up and running for quite a few years.  It has become more and more popular with members both for publicising information on a myriad of subjects, as well as providing a lively and well used Forum.  The Forum in particular enables fast communication between members, again on a wide range of subject matter.

The future of the Monthly Newsletter has been discussed at length by the committee and we have come to the conclusion that producing such a document in print form is really no longer necessary.  The information is all on the website.  It is therefore our intention to cease publishing printed copies of the Newsletter from June onwards.  The committee is currently looking at the possibility of producing a professionally printed booklet detailing what the club and its members have been up to, along with other articles of interest on a six-monthly, or annual, basis.  It may also be appropriate to publish a single A4 communication sheet on, say, a bi-monthly basis for the junior members of the Club.

However, if you feel that you still require a copy of the Newsletter on a monthly basis then please contact Stuart Galloway, and we will try and come to some alternative arrangement.

    Club Tour to Derbyshire

The 2009 club tour is planned for the weekend of Fri 16th October to Mon 19th October, at Haddon Grove Farm Cottages (see www.haddongrovefarmcottages.co.uk) near Bakewell in Derbyshire.  We already have 34 people interested in going on the tour (from the people who went on the 2008 tour) and we are now looking for any additional people who would like to go.  Accommodation is limited to about 40 people, so please let Nigel know as soon as possible if you would like to go.  Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis!  Price per person for 3 nights accommodation is approx £85.00.

    London Marathon  26th April
Ten runners from Biggleswade AC took part in this year's Flora London Marathon.  Although the forecast earlier in the week had suggested cool temperatures with some light showers on race day (perfect for runners), the day turned out to be sunny and warm.  This was perfect for the thousands of spectators that lined the route, but not so good for the runners as they battled their way around the sun-soaked streets of London.

First runner home for Biggleswade AC was "mr consistent" Ian Skerratt who once again defied his 58 years with a brilliant time of 3 hour 8 mins, which gave him 26th place in his age-group category, an extraordinary achievement in what is the biggest marathon race in the world.  Next home was Derek Litchfield who finished in 3h 37m which smashed his previous best time (set 6 years ago) by over 30 minutes, and Derek raised a large amount of money for the Sue Ryder charity.  First lady home for the club was Isobel Everest from Langford, running her very first marathon, and supporting the Sparks charity.  Isobel was aiming for a sub 3h 30m time, and was well on target at halfway, but leg cramps from 17 miles meant she slowed to a finishing time of 3h 42m - which was still a fantastic debut and gives her automatic entry to next year's race.

London Marathon regular Andy Bruce, whose training had been interrupted by injury, was disappointed with his finishing time of 3h 54m, while Paula Dawson and Maria Tatchley had a great time running the 26.2 miles together and finishing in 4h 14m - a new PB for Paula who was raising cash for Breast Cancer.  Just behind Paula and Maria, marathon debutant Hannah Street from Beeston battled her way around the course to finish in a very creditable 4h 19m despite feeling unwell on the day.  Hannah has shown great dedication in her training and can look forward to faster times in the future.  New mum Sarah Geeson-Orsgood ran a very solid race to finish in 4h 27m on limited training, and Julia Mackay from Sutton was just 5 minutes behind.  Julia was disappointed with her time of 4h 32m, but this was still a huge PB by over 40 minutes and a great run in the warm conditions.  Cat Marriott (running for her 1st claim club the RSPB staff association, and dressed as some kind of bird) finished alongside Julia in 4h 32m

     Ian Skerratt  3h 08m
     Derek Litchfield  3h 37m
     Isobel Everest  3h 42m

Southern Mens League,  Braintree, 2 May
Biggleswade AC were 4th of 4 with 73 points

Zac Morrison, Richard Bevan, Tom Worboys, Daniel Steel, David Brown travelled to Braintree with 3 officials (Ken Prior, Angela King and Kim Morrison) for the opening match of the Southern Mens league, the opposition was local rivals Bedford Hosts Harlow and Peterborough.  As it was the first match in Div 3 N we were not sure how we would fare being promoted from Div 4 N!!

We were reasonably competitive in the sprints and having some good results even white washing our rivals Bedford in 100 200 400 and 400 m Hudles.  We are still weak in the throws area where we lost points, but it was a good test and the magnificent 5 competed well.  The next match is on 16th May at Newham.
