Sandy 10 Mile Race and 3km Fun Run - Thank you!

Many thanks to all the club members and family and friends who helped with this year's Sandy 10 and Fun Run.  It was the biggest race in the 27 year history of the event, with 650 entries in the 10 mile race and nearly 70 in the Fun Run.  The feedback from runners has been very positive, with almost 100% saying they would do the race again.  We can all be justifiably proud of another well organised and well marshalled event.

The Club website has results for the 10 Mile Race and the 3 Km Fun Run.

    Club Tour to Derbyshire 2010

The 2010 club tour is planned for the weekend of Fri 1st to Mon 4th October, at Haddon Grove Farm Cottages (see www.haddongrovefarmcottages.co.uk) near Bakewell in Derbyshire.  This is the same venue that we used last year and proved to be very popular, with very well equipped cottages, a stunning location and a heated swimming pool.

We already have 32 people wanting to go on the tour (from the people who went on the 2009 tour) and we are now looking for any additional people who would like to go.  The accommodation complex can take a maximum of about 46 people, so please let Nigel know as soon as possible if you would like to go.  Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis!  Price per person for 3 nights accommodation is approx £85.00.

Southern Mens League  1st May Newham .
Not sure what to expect having been relegated last year - and with a new crop of young talent competing as a senior for the 1st time - we were very hopeful.

The track started well with victories for David Brown and Scott Parsons in the 400m hurdles followed by a 3rd in the 100m for Tom Worboys and another 3rd for debutant Andrew Baldwin in the B 100m.  Richard Bevan had a fine run for 3rd in the 800m A with David another victory in the B race.  In the 110m hurdles a surprising victory for David equalling the clubs Vets club record.

In the 400m Tom was very pleased for second in the A string behind former youth international Nick Choudrey from Luton, David was 4th in the B string. 200m saw another victory for the club with Scott with Andrew a fine 2nd in what the conditions can only be described as wet, if not very wet!!

Richard pulled out another 2nd in the 1500m, and then disaster struck.

The 4 x 100m quartet of Tom, Andrew , David and Scott, were in a very close race between local rivals Luton as the baton came round for the 2nd change Andrew to David, a muscle tear in the groin of David brought him to an abrupt halt but not letting to let the team down the baton was handed over in the correct manner to Scott to bring home the baton in 2nd place but well clear of 3rd.  David was to be part of the 4 x 400 quartet but could not take any further part, but as always the club pulled together and Richard replaced David and the team won having beaten a club from the Div 1 match, no other team from our match contested the relay so Biggleswade picked up the maximum 7 points for a win.

In the field events we were well beaten in the throws but the team of David and Chris Watson had a private tussle in the hammer who was going to be the best thrower from the club.  Chris was by 42 cm and picked up 2 vital points for the A string and David collected only 3 points in the B string.

Javelin was marginally better with Chris picking up 3rd in the A string and Simon Humphrey another 3rd in the B string.

In the shot Simon was only just in front of Chris so Simon was 5th in the A string and Chris 4th in the B string.

The Discus was in extreme wet conditions and was slipping out of the hands of most, but Chris was 5th before retiring for a dry spot in the stands and David with his injury did a standing throw for another 5th before retiring.

In the jumps Scott was a debutant in the Long jump and was a fine 3rd with Tom Worboys finishing 2nd in the B event.

The Pole Vault was cancelled so every one received four points (usually a good event) for Biggleswade, the High Jump was a family duo of Josh Watson 2nd in the A string and his father winning the B string.

In the Triple Jump Tom and Josh were both victorious.

    Final match scores:
     Luton  1st  162 points
     Biggleswade    2nd  159
     Hastings  3rd  113.5
     Invicta  4th  103.5
     Istead  5th  100
     Met Police  6th  90
     Basildon  7th  86
