NEWS   FOR   YOUNG   ATHLETES

Biggleswade AC 50th Anniversary Party
Friday 22nd November at Everton Village Hall starting at 8:00pm

It may surprise many of you to learn that Biggleswade Athletic Club is 50 years old this year.   We plan to mark the very special occasion by holding a Cheese and Wine and Beer Party at Everton Village Hall.   This should be a great occasion to get together and celebrate a very special anniversary in the history of our club.   We are hoping that some ex-members may be able to come along and renew acquaintances.   The cost is just £2 per head all inclusive - a bargain! So why not come along and enjoy an evening in the company of new and old members.   Please contact Nigel or Stuart, or any committee member, if you would like to attend.

Le Touquet Weekend 2003
Several of you have already expressed an interest in going to Le Touquet on the weekend of 5th/6th July next year, to compete in the Le Touquet 10k.   Recent information suggests that there are also 5k and 20k races, if 10k is not for you! Initial thoughts are to travel over to Le Touquet (near Bolougne) on the Friday evening.   The races take place on Saturday afternoon at about 5pm.   We can then enjoy the local hospitality on Saturday evening and Sunday, returning home later on Sunday.   If you have not already done so, please let Nigel or Stuart know of your interest in this "not to be missed" overseas extravaganza.

Round the Leagues and Series...

South of England Cross Country Championships
Bicton College, Exmouth, 25th January 2003

We have not received the documentation for this event yet but please decide whether you would like to enter in the near future so that we can get names in on time.   Please let Stuart Galloway (01767-223942) or Neil Gregory (01767-314974) know if you wish to run.   Cost will probably be £3 for seniors/Vets and £2 for all others.

Henlow 10 - 6th November

This is the 50th year of the race (last year's had to be cancelled following 11th September) and the Club has been invited to enter, rather late in the day.   The race starts at 1:30pm from Old Warden, but assemble at Henlow prior to midday to be bussed out to the start.   Entrants must be 18 or over on 31 October 2002.
Chris Clarke has the entry form; let Chris or Stuart Galloway know by 27th October if you wish to enter - send a Cheque to either person, payable to Biggleswade AC for £8.50, with: FULL name , Date of birth, FULL details of your car (make, model, colour, and registration number).   For further information phone Chris Clarke on 01234 216245 or Stuart Galloway on 01767-223942

National Cross Country Relays

County Cross Country
Ampthill Park, 4th January 2003

(Combined with Bucks Champs). Last year we had 7 athletes selected to compete for the county in the Inter-County Champs at Nottingham, let us try to get even more athletes selected.   The selection process is not only the County Champs , the selectors also look at league results, Eastern Athletic Champs, Southern Champs before the final selection.   However, generally the first 8 in the County Champs are short listed.

We Will Miss You Emily

All senior members of the club would like to wish Emily Woodfield all the best as she flies out to the Philippines to work as a conservation volunteer for 3 months and hope she will return back to us to catch the last few cross country races of the season.   Emily is a valued member of the women's road running and cross country team and will be sorely missed by all.

A World of Running Information

For those who are Internet friendly, there is an excellent web site full of useful RUNNING information at www.runnersworld.com.   The site has recently been revamped and it contains information on training (for all levels and abilities), a race diary, injuries, health, nutrition, etc.   There is also a Forum where you can view or contribute to matters that concern your fellow runners.   So why not give it a try.

Looking after yourself...
Keep a Running Log

A well-kept logbook can be your greatest ally for reaching peak fitness, recording the highs and lows in your running career and being a great aid to motivation.

The information you record is up to you, but normally includes training or race route, speed, distance, the weather and how you felt during and after the run.   Some people also note what shoes they wore, their maximum heart-rate and how they compared with other runners.

Recording something about any injuries that you pick up and what you did to overcome them can also aid prevention in the future.

It can also be made more interesting by perhaps recording some of the world events that were happening on a particular day.   It becomes a great book to look back on and learn from.

Free Chocolate for Juniors

As part of the seniors recruitment drive Gavin has pledged to donate a chocolate bar to any juniors who introduce a new senior member to our club who then comes running with us more than twice.   Even if its your Mum or Dad, next door neighbour or just a runner you know who doesn't come to the club.   If you require some proper invitations to entice them please see any of the senior members.   So get pestering and earn those chocolate bars.

  • Junior training
In addition to what is already on offer, Ken is arranging some beginners' and intermediate high jump sessions.   They will probably be on a Friday evening from 9-10pm unless the small gym becomes vacant earlier.

There will also be some sessions at Rowney Warren on some Saturday mornings for cross-country runners and sprinters (of all abilities).

See Ken or David for further details.

  • Winter clothing
Stay warm with a Biggleswade sweatshirt - T-shirts, tracksters and jackets also available - see Ken
