Kingfisher Way Run (Winter Edition)
Saturday 29th December

The Kingfisher Way is a 21 mile footpath along the banks of the River Ivel from Baldock (the source) to Temspford (where the Ivel joins the River Great Ouse).  The route travels through Arlesey, Langford, Biggleswade, Sandy and Blunham).  If you only wish to run part of the course, you are welcome to join/leave at points along route.  More information in next month's Newsletter and on the Web site.

Sandy 10 Mile Race

Next year's Sandy 10 (provisional date Sunday 30th March) is the 25th running of the event, and to mark this occasion we wish to make it an extra-special event.  This could take the form of additional sponsorship from local businesses, and commemorative goodies for all finishers.  If you have any ideas for the above please contact Nigel.

Three Counties, Shuttleworth, 11 Nov

We (Biggleswade Athletic Club) are hosting this race at Old Warden and we will need quite a few helpers.  We are expecting about three hundred runners.

Everybody who normally runs should still be able to run but may be required to help before or after the race, we will also need help from those not running, partners husbands wives etc. to assist during the race.

We will need help with:
  - Car parking
  - Catering(serving teas and coffees)
  - Laying out the course
  - Marshalling
  - Clearing up
Please let Neil know if you are available.

Club Championship Races

5K Championship
This year we have decided to add a 5K championship to the existing 10k, 10 mile and Half Marathon championship races.  To qualify for the 5K championship you must run in one of the three 5K races staged by Fairlands Valley Spartans (Stevenage).  The races all take place on a Wednesday evening at 7:45pm, on Wed 14th Nov, Wed 28th Nov, Wed 12th Dec.  Your best time in any of the three races will be used to work out the 5k club champions, based on age-graded times.  These races fill up fast, so enter early to avoid disappointment.  There are unlikely to be any entries on the day.

Half Marathon Championship
Don't forget that the Club's Half Marathon Championship race is the Beds Harriers Wootton Half Marathon on Sunday 9th December.

Team Beds&Luton

Graham Simpson and Joby Hobbs attended our last committee meeting and gave us an overview of what Team Beds&Luton are undertaking within the County.  A lot of work is being done with the schools, particularly with regard to encouraging youngsters to not only take part as athletes but also to become volunteer support staff thereby, potentially, helping to satisfy the ever increasing demand for coaches and officials.  There are workshops available to help clubs operate as efficient units and to highlight sources of funding to them.  Some of our committee members are due to attend a Club Development Forum at the end of November.

Development of Clubmark Procedures

A very useful meeting of the Coaching staff was held recently, during which all aspects of the process of supervising young athletes when away from club headquarters were discussed.  Many scenarios were considered and from the meeting a procedure has been produced for the benefit of coaching and support staff highlighting how this supervision should be carried out.  The document has been embodied into our Clubmark procedures.

Club Trip to Derbyshire

24 members and partners spent the weekend of 5th-8th October in the beautiful setting of Darwin Lakes, just north of Matlock on the edge of the Derbyshire Peak District.  The cottages at Darwin Lakes were all superbly appointed, and the setting next to a small lake, bustling with birdlife, was very relaxing in the warm Autumnal sunshine.

On Saturday morning, three runners from Matlock AC arrived to take us on a 7 and 10 mile run across the moors and hills around Chatsworth House.  This turned out to be an epic adventure as both the long and short running groups finished up running over 13 miles on some tough hills.  They must measure the miles differently up there!  But it was a superb run in beautiful scenery, so thanks to the two Steve's and Andy (plus Jan Forrester) from Matlock AC for the outing.  Saturday afternoon was spent relaxing, walking, shopping and biking, and on Saturday evening we all went out for an excellent meal at the Temple Hotel in Matlock Bath.

On Sunday morning, the runners travelled down to Middleton Top (the start of the High Peak Trail) for a run and cycle along the trail.  At least it was predominately flat this time, but the scenery was just as stunning in the sunshine, and a few runners still had the energy for another 12-14 mile run.  On Sunday evening a BBQ was organised (thanks Pat) and everyone tucked into some excellent food and the last few pints of beer from the barrel of "Pieces of Eight" (thanks again Pat!)

Many thanks to everyone who came on the trip and contributed to such a successful club weekend.  You are all great company.  We'll have to do it again sometime!
