Annual Club Dinner and Senior Presentation evening - Fri 22 Jan

We have set the date for the annual Club Dinner and Senior Presentation evening for Friday 22nd January 2010 at the normal venue that we have used for many years now, The Green Man at Stanford.  It is always a very pleasurable evening with some good food at a very reasonable price, served in the conservatory of the pub, so we have the area to ourselves.  It is a time for meeting up with friends and other club members, having a good chat and enjoying a very pleasant evening in convivial company.  It also gives us the chance to celebrate the achievements of the club over the past year as well as the performances of our athletes.  Members' partners are very welcome.

Please let Stuart Galloway if you would like to attend the evening.  Details of menus will be posted on the Forum later in November and in the December newsletter.

An earnest advance request, please, please let Stuart have your menu selection as soon as possible after details are published but by no later than 12th January.  To reduce administrative time and effort we do request that money be paid up front, preferably by cheque.  The cost is likely to be around £22 a head.

    Annual Club Booklet

We are planning to publish the first of our Annual Club Booklets by the end of February 2010, so if you can write something about your running achievements or experiences, ideas on racing or training, favourite recipes for those cold winter days, or anything that you think might be suitable to do with athletics or our club, then we would love to hear from you.  Get some ideas down on paper or computer and submit them to Stuart Galloway, preferably by e-mail to stuart.galloway@ntlworld.com.  Closing date for any material will be Friday 15th January 2010.  Go on have a go and get writing!

Cape Wrath and other Running Challenges
A talk by Nigel Bush on Tue 17 Nov

Nigel Bush will be giving a presentation on Tuesday 17th November at 8:15pm in the Classroom of the Future (Sandy Track) about his running experiences, especially the Cape Wrath Challenge.  It should last no more than 1 hour and there will be FREE BISCUITS!  A perfect way to relax after Zoe's Speed Session on the track.

    Southern Mens League Debate

There is a debate on the structure of the Southern Mens League, if you have any thoughts then please let us know.  Don't keep quiet if you have any views.

Current suggestions from other league clubs:

  • combine Southern Mens and Womens - cutting down hire costs, officials commitments (each club is expected to provide one track judge, one timekeeper and 3 field officials at every match - home fixtures also provide scorers, starter, marksman announcer etc
  • reducing programmes - currently there are 18 events in a southern mens match.

Unfortunately there are only 5 matches on the current league programme - between the months of May and Aug roughly one every 3 weeks for men and one every month for the women - April - Sept, usually they have no match in June.

There are only 6 weekends set aside for the regional league programme in a season with the remainder of the weeks taking up with other fixtures, therefore if a reduced programme is the preferred option then a hurdler will only get a max of 3 races a season as will the High jumper etc.  The proposal is one sprint one middle distance and one endurance race each match, the same with the jumps and throws with the events not taking place in one match, will be competed over in the second etc.

We currently have a mixture of athletes who do specialise in one particular discipline - if reduced possibilities come about is three events a year enough? What other options can they have to find competition.

This is not necessarily our option on preference - just a scenario.  If you have a thought or voice let us know.

This is currently being discussed with what ever is decided by the clubs and league committee not being considered until 2011 season at the earliest.

Other leagues are also having discussions on similar lines.

    County and UK Rankings

The end of season UK rankings are being published - and we have one athlete who is currently the No 1 in the UK in a field discipline, watch this space for the more information.

The top 10 County rankings will be distributed at the Beds AAA AGM, which is being held on home soil at Sandy Sports Centre Theatre Hall on the 13th November from 7 30 pm

Also at this event the following from Biggleswade AC will be receiving their county colours
     Juliet Naylor
     Debs Bryant
     Euan Dickson Earle
     Fiona Hunter
     Amy Lyons
     Helen Middleton (2nd Claim)

Biggleswade AC Track & Field Open - 26 Sep

At our end of season open on the 26th September - this was the fourth year and established on the national calendar now. Next years is the 25th September.

At this years event we had a quite a few records broken, club records, stadium records and a possible world record to be ratified.

    Club records:
     Sandra Ingham  V45 80 m hurdles  24.5 secs
     Kieran Stevenson  U11 80m  12.0 secs
     Beth Harvey  U15 G Hammer  28.26m
     Kieran Stevenson  U11 LJ  3.84m

The world record to be ratified was Roald Bradstock from the USA in the Javelin 69.01 m Vet 45, and Roald only came second to local international Neil McLellan from Stevenage.

We had a top class quality group of athletes with the Discus the top 2 female U13 ranked athletes swapping places in the rankings - the top 4 in the U13 javelin and the top 6 in the U17 javelin.  An excellent competition in almost perfect conditions.

The club should be very proud of themselves - plus over £1,000 received which will pay for the track hire for competitions this year.

    Club Championship Road Race

The remaining club championship road race for 2009 is:
Half Marathon  Sun 13 Dec  Beds Harriers Half Marathon, Wootton

...Club 10 Mile Championship (Swineshead 10, 13 Sep)

    Club Tour to Derbyshire

38 club members and partners travelled to Haddon Grove Farm Cottages, near Bakewell, in the heart of the Peak District for the club's annual "running weekend" on Friday 16th October.  This was a new venue, having spent the two previous years at Darwin Lakes near Matlock, and everyone seemed to like the new location, the cottages and the swimming pool and games room.  A bar with two barrels of real ale was soon set up in "cottage HQ" and many thanks to Pat for organising this.

On Saturday morning, ex-club member and ladies captain Jan Forrester arrived with several of her Matlock AC clubmates to take us on some local running routes in Lathkill Dale and Monsal Dale.  We were blest with superb weather , stunning scenery and great company.  Thank you Jan and co for some great runs.  Not content with a 10 mile morning run, a party of about 18 headed off to Monsal Head in the afternoon for a beautiful 7 mile circular walk.  The route went through Monsal Dale and Cressbrook to Litton Mill, then up over some very steep climbs over Highdale (sorry Pat and Rosemary!) to eventually re-join the River Wye and the return to Monsal Head for a well deserved drink.

Saturday evening was BBQ night, and everyone brought along their own food to be cooked by CHIEF CHEF Pat, who once again did a sterling job over the hot coals.  The only down side to a superb evening was that both barrels of beer mysteriously emptied simultaneously soon after 23:00 hrs.

Sunday morning was an "ad-lib" run of about 8 miles through Sheldon, down a very step sided and cow-guarded Deepdale, followed by a VERY steep up hill slog back to Sheldon.  Fortunately we had enough map readers in the running group to find our way back to the cottages.  After some free time on Sunday afternoon (some watching Jenson Button in the Grand Prix), the group set off to the Lathkill Hotel in Over Haddon for a thoroughly enjoyable evening meal (and beer).  Following the meal (and beer) a scouting party of 5 decided to return to the cottages on foot via a very dark and creepy Lathkill Dale footpath, with no effective torches.  Emerging from the Dale one hour later, it was straight to the "RSPB" cottage (the only one still up) for some music, games and after-eights!

Many thanks to everyone who made the weekend such a roaring success.  You are a fantastic bunch.

    Approx 3.5miles
Well done to those who made it. A beautiful day and a lovely but challenging course.
U11 boys Ollie Trudgill 18th. Not only his first race but also the furthest he has ever run (he is normally in the sprint group). As you can imagine, nobody was going to overtake him on the run in! An excellent first race.
U13 boys Connor Trudgill and James Thomas pushed each other to good positions, 4th and 6th respectively.
In the U15 boys, Sam Smith had a good race to finish 13th. Lone senior woman Hannah Street coasted round, looking remarkably untroubled, to finish 29th in 31:21 in a high class field. The race was won by Natasha Peters from Bedford (and part-time Sandy Sports Centre staff member) who beat fellow Bedford and GB runner Nicola Sykes in a close finish.

    Henley Half Marathon,  11 Oct

     Joanne Ellary  2:12:23  PB

RAF Henlow 10 Mile Road Race,  21 Oct
On a day which seemed ideal for road running, with a light drizzle and cool temperatures, the four Biggleswade AC runners who took part in this year's RAF Henlow 10 mile race found the event tougher than expected.  The culprit appeared to be the nagging head wind on the point to point 10 mile course that winds it way from the start at Shuttleworth Aerodrome, via Old Warden, Ireland and Shefford, to the finish at RAF Henlow Camp.  Vet 55 Chris Clarke was running in his 20th Henlow 10 race - quite an achievement in this historical race which was first run in 1951
     Damien Pitts  69mins 59secs
     Steve West  72mins 15secs
     Mark Sylvester  75mins ??secs
     Chris Clarke  79mins 55secs

Three Counties at Stopsley,  25 Oct
Congratulations to all the runners who turned out for the club at the first race of the Three Counties Cross Country series at Stopsley.  Over 40 club members ran, which is the highest number ever to represent Biggleswade AC in a single XC race, in our 58 year history!  Quite some achievement.  Everybody's finishing position is important, as this pushes the other club's runners further back down the field, causing them to score a worse points total.  Special congratulations to our ladies team who WON the event, and who packed brilliantly with 6 ladies in the first 20.
