NEWS   FOR   YOUNG   ATHLETES

Club Championship Races

Don't forget that the Standalone 10Km on 6 October is one of our Club Championship Races so get your entries in soon - Neil Gregory has the forms.   Unfortunately, the Club was not very well represented in the Swineshead 10, our 10 mile championship race.

Running Weekend 2003
A number of club members have asked if we can organise a Running Weekend away (possibly overseas!) to partake in a race and enjoy the social atmosphere.   One event we could aim for is the Le Touqeut 10K in France which takes place on Saturday 5th July 2003.   Le Touquet is a pleasant seaside town close to Bolougne, and therefore well within reach for a weekend away.   If you are interested in joining this trip, please let Nigel or Stuart know as soon as possible.   If there is enough interest we will need to book travel arrangements and accommodation before it is all snapped up by other visiting British runners.   Le Touquet has both Youth Hostel and B&B accommodation.

Winter Weekend Training Runs
Owing to the darker evenings there will be no more monthly Tuesday night "away" training runs until next year.   As a substitute we could plan some winter weekend longer runs - on a Saturday or Sunday morning - for those who may be training for a Half or Full Marathon.   The first run will be in November (date to be decided).   If you have a nice route (preferably off-road) in your area of about 12 to 14 miles, let Nigel or Stuart know.

AAA of England - Road Relay Championships
Sutton Park (Birmingham), Sat/Sun 26/27 Oct

Senior Men and Women race on the Saturday, Under-13s to Under-17s on the Sunday.   Please advise Stuart Galloway or Neil Gregory (for Seniors), or Ken Prior or David Brown (for Juniors), by Monday 7th October at the latest, if you are interested in running any of these events.   Hopefully, we will be able to get a team together.

Increasing problems in Sutton Park have required an increase in the number of Marshals that have to be deployed.   We are asked to provide 5 Marshals on both of the days - in return the Club would receive £100 (£200 if we cover both days).   If you are interested in acting as a Marshal, please advise any Committee member or Coach.

If we can get teams together for any of these races we will advise on transport arrangements later.

Permits for Cross Country League Events

We have been advised that rules have changed where permits for Cross Country League events are concerned. Each league event at different venues now have to have a separate permit and risk assessment, not as in previous years where one would cover all the matches in the league.

Veteran "Masters" (and Mistresses?)

British Veterans Athletic Federation have changed their name to "British Masters Athletic Federation".   Does this mean to say that we have to refer to all our lady members over 35 as "Mistresses" ?

Woking Athletic Club -Young Athletes Meeting

We have received a letter of thanks from the Chairman of the Woking Athletic Club for sending such a large team to their Young Athletes Open Championships on 1st September.   Over 500 individual athletes registered.   They look forward to seeing us again next year.

James Drinkwater at Summer Training Camp

During the school holidays James Drinkwater attended a residential Summer Training Camp 19th - 23 August at Bracknell in Berks. Here is his report of the course:
During the school holidays I attended the Adidas Young Athletes Summer Training Camp, which is a camp for runners of all abilities.   At the course there were national coaches and international athletes, but most were County standard.   The course was held at Wellington College Bracknell, Berks.   All the athletes stayed for the 5 days.   This was a typical day:-
7.30 am Light Jog and Stretch
8.00 am Breakfast
9.00 am Planning a suitable interval training session
10.30 am Completing the interval training session
12.30 pm Adidas foot scan and discussion on footwear
1.00 pm Lunch
2.00 pm Core stability session
4.00 pm 50 minute run
6.00 pm Dinner
7.00 pm Visit from a top athlete (i.e.   Mark Richardson)
8.00 pm Free time
11.00 pm Lights Out
Apart from getting up at 7.00 am each morning it was a really enjoyable and educating experience.   It was encouraging to know that I was holding my own with some national athletes (at least in training).   Their website address is - WWW.TRAILPLUS.COM.

Some points to come out from the course were:

  1. Plan your races in advance, throughout the season identify the important ones, and with your coach prepare a training/racing timetable
  2. Do not race every week, the body needs to recover.
  3. Do not train on the same programme day after day, alternate the regime .

Coaching Workshops

On Sunday 29th September 13 of our athletes, from various ages and disciplines have been accepted to attend an Eastern Athletic Association Coaching workshop at Luton.   The workshop was available to all from U 15 level to senior and covered most athletic disciplines.   There will be more to follow and if you would like to be considered speak to a coach, who will tell you what you need to do to be selected.   Also in attendance will be most of Biggleswade Athletic Club Coaches, to further their knowledge.   On the same day 7 of our youngsters will be competing in the Eastern Athletic Associations Combined Events Championships (budding Denise Lewis and Dean Macey's) at Peterborough.   For both events details will be in the next newsletter.

London Marathon

Next year's London Marathon is on Sunday 13th April 2003.   Don't forget to let us know if your entry to the London Marathon is rejected and you wish to be considered for a Club place.   We are usually lucky enough to receive two guaranteed places.

Looking after yourself...

Don't overdo it
The amount of training you carry out plays a key role in determining your real injury risk.   Studies have shown that your best direct injury predictor may be the amount of training you completed last month.   Fatigued muscles do a poor job of protecting their associated connective tissues, increasing the risk of damage to bone, cartilage, tendons and ligaments.   If you are a runner, the link between training quantity and injury means that the total mileage is an excellent indicator of your injury risk.   The more miles you accrue per week, the higher the chances of injury.   One recent investigation found a marked upswing in injury risk above 40 miles of running per week.   So take care - don't just pile on the miles.   Often quality is of more use than quantity.

Hill Work
Hill work results in the calf muscles learning to contract more quickly and thereby generating work at a higher rate, they become more powerful.   The calf muscle achieves this by developing more muscle fibres, around two or three times as many when compared to running on the flat.   For the athlete, it can mean higher running speeds and shorter footstrike times.   Remember, most treadmills in gyms have the facility of introducing an incline so rather than just running on the flat every time, try a bit of hill work - it will aid stamina development and will also help to prevent injury.   But again - build up carefully.   Your body has to get used to a new training regime.

Swineshead 10 Mile - Club Championship
Eight club runners (a slightly disappointing number) turned out for the annual 10 Mile Club Championship race at Swineshead.   On a hot sunny day, Roy came 2nd overall in the race, and just managed to beat Roger for the Club Championship title (age graded).   Roger took the Over 50 prize in the overall event.   Jan (running with the advantage of a hangover) finished ahead of Jackie to take the Club's Female title.

Swineshead 4 mile Fun Run
The club were well represented by James, Chris and Jonathon Drinkwater.   Congratulations to whichever of James or Chris who won the event - your editor has two different reports, presumably the other came second; elder brother James found himself on the 10 Mile course having taken a wrong turning.

High Peak 40 Mile Challenge - 21st September
Three members of the Club went up to Buxton in Derbyshire to take part in this gruelling but enjoyable event.   The weather was superb and the scenery impressive as ever.
Chris Clarke achieved a personal best for the course in a time of 7hrs. 17mins. and came a very creditable 9th place.
Jan Forrester completed the event in 8hrs. 24mins.   She was 3rd lady and 1st female vet (sorry - Mistress!) - an excellent performance!
Peter Eaton ran the event in 9hrs 1min and would have been under 9 hours if he had not gone slightly astray in the last mile.
Well done to all three!

Vauxhall 5km
James Drinkwater came 20th out of 151 runners, in 17mins. 41secs.
