The background colour is currently set to an approximation to "gold", which is part of the club colours.   Do you like it, or would you prefer something more subtle? - please let me know what you think - davidhindle@msn.com

Club 10Km Championship Race

If you plan to run in this event (the Standalone Letchworth 10Km, Sunday 5 October, start 10:30 ), make sure you enter the race as normal and we will work out club positions from the results.  Neil has Entry Forms, or you can enter online at www.runnersworld.co.uk

BE SAFE AND BE SEEN THIS WINTER

As the nights draw in it is harder and harder to run in day light.  It will soon be dark as soon as you get home from work or school.  Please make every attempt to wear light coloured clothing, reflective bands or even florescent vents while training.  Vests can be purchased from Millets, builders merchants and all good sports shops.  They are very cheap, light weight and could save your life.  The new Biggleswade Jacket also have a reflective band across the back and are very comfortable to run in.
Run safe, be safe and be seen this winter.

The "Tuesday" Senior Programme

All events start at 7pm unless stated, and are on a Tuesday (except 2nd October).  Meet inside the bar area of the Weatherley Centre.  Any future ideas for programme activities should be passed to Gavin or one of the committee.  We hope you will all find these events enjoyable, they are designed to improve your running and over-all fitness - all feedback is welcome.

2 Oct  THURSDAY - Speed Work with Steve
7 Oct  Rucksack Training - please bring a small backpack or rucksack with a two-litre bottle of water inside wrapped in a couple of jumpers.
14 Oct  Fartlek Training organised by Gavin.
21 Oct  Handicap Run Round London Road And Dells Lane. CLOCKWISE.
(Your Editor feels it is unfair to Biggleswade runners to say that running clockwise is a handicap.  Unless they're doing it backwards.)
28 Oct  "Bring A Colleague Or Friend" Night with drinks in the Yorkshire Grey afterwards.
4 Nov  Speed Work with Steve (he's hard but fair)
11 Nov  A Lap Of Biggleswade Boundary
 18 Nov  Ladies Choice
25 Nov  Running Club Twinning - cross training with another fitness organisation.

Junior Training

A list of supplemental training sessions for specific events will be in the next Newsletter and will be on the web-site (www.biggleswadeac.org.uk) in the next week or so.  These will be in addition to the normal Monday Sports Hall sessions.

"Route 51" from Blunham to Bedford

Gavin Elliot writes that he was recently let in to a little secret of a superb running route called Route 51 from Blunham to Bedford by one of our ladies team, Val Kemp.  It is in fact a tarmac cycle path.  It starts at Old Station Close in Blunham and heads cross country to Priory Marina in Bedford via Willington Lock and the Danish camp.  It is lovely underfoot with many great views.  It also has sign posts with mile marke4rs on them.

Much wild life can be spotted as it cuts through woodland and along the banks of a lake and a river (including deer, foxes and grass snakes).  It's perfect for a Sunday morning run either on your own or with the rest of the family on bikes.  This traffic free route is a must.  For more information speak to either Val or Gavin.

Welcome to a newly elected member, Pasquale Pellecchia - Pasquale is a senior and lives in Tye Green.  He is a member of Harlow Running Club but has joined us as a second-claim member so that he can run some cross-country events for us.  All the very best for the season, Pasquale!  It's good to have you on board.

Clubmark Scheme

The presentation ceremony went off well and it has now been formally recorded that we have achieved Clubmark Accreditation.  Let us hope that a decision is reached soon as to the siting of the proposed new Athletic Track - it's like trying to get blood out of a stone to get any formal statement from the District or County Council!

Looking after yourself - Soy

Have you ever tried any soy products?  Soy is now available in various tasty forms such as soy milk, veggie burgers, bakery products (from soy flour), and other items like frankfurters and some pastas.  It can provide high quality protein in a generally low calorific form so can help to keep the weight down - it is also very low in saturated fat.

Many studies have been undertaken over the years as to the effects of its properties but it is generally considered to help prevent the onset of heart disease and is active in the control of blood cholesterol.  Give it a go - for some of us older runners, it may even play a role in the prevention of osteoporosis.

Looking after yourself - Hitting the Wall

During the course of a marathon or other ultra-event the body will utilise energy from glycogen in the muscles and free fatty acids in the blood and body tissue.  The body can produce energy more efficiently from the glycogen so will use this first but the store is limited and will eventually run out.  The only source of energy will then be from the free fatty acids.

This is the point when runners "hit the wall" and the body is suddenly dependent upon the less efficient energy source and running becomes that bit harder.  You can normally expect this to happen anywhere from 18 miles onwards (but if you're nor properly prepared it could be earlier).  This is because reliance on energy from fat requires more oxygen than energy from muscle glycogen.  You therefore have to work harder to get the same result.

Most runners will "hit the wall" but if properly prepared the body can cope.  (That's where those longer, slower, runs come into their own.)  It is vital therefore when going into a marathon to ensure that muscle glycogen stores are maximised.  The less reliance you have on fat as a source of energy the better.  Fat has an important role to play but do not underestimate the importance of maximising glycogen stores.  Don't try dieting in the last week just to lose a few pounds of weight!

Biggleswade came 3rd out of 4 with 51 points.
In the final League Table, Barnet and Loughton were promoted, Biggleswade came 16th with a total of 102 points. Encouragingly, we started the season with one athlete on the first meeting and the last one at Southend was our biggest turnout with 8. A promising start for our first season in the Womens Southern League after many years in the wilderness.

Swineshead 10 Mile - Club Championship  14 Sep
Eight club members took part in the Swineshead 10 on a very hot day.  We are still awaiting the official results, but unofficial timings indicate that the Club Championship winners are Roy Kellaway and Karen Worrell - well done to both.  Also, congratulations to Karen on being 1st Lady overall, Emily being 2nd Lady overall and Roy on being 2nd male overall.  We hope to have the official results next month.

Although we have used the Swineshead 10 for a number of years as our Club Championship race, we did find the Lady's prize list very poor this year compared to the Mens.  Also, it is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain official results for the race.  We are therefore considering using a new 10 Mile race to host our Club Championship next year - one possibility is the Leighton Buzzard 10, run in April/May.  This is a well organised event, which often hosts the Beds County Championship.  Let us know what you think.
