Annual Rounders Match: Seniors 6 Juniors 4½

Tuesday 31st August saw the rivalry between young and old clash head on in the form of the annual Rounders match between the reining champions the "Seniors" versus the "Juniors".  The Juniors were looking for revenge after last years narrow defeat.

Egos were truly on show as the Seniors lead by Tim Huxtable and Damo Pitts first stepped out to bat.  Hard hitting Alan Goodman soon was smacking the ball around but with so many juniors packing the outfield it wasn't long before the seniors sustained heavy casualties as one by one many were stumped out.  Even Gavin was ran out by some excellent fielding by the "Bests" after getting a rounder.  Gavin insists that video evidence should be used for all tight refereeing decisions next year.

Val Kemp showed she was ambidextrous by being able to bat with both arms equally well (both poorly) making the juniors scamper like ants to cover any holes in their fielding.  Jennifer also made an appearance off the physio bench to show that she could still run.

The Juniors were soon put into bat.  But with many outstanding catches by Man of the Match Tanya Tatchley's boyfriend John, they also began to fall by the wayside.  Tim "The Hustler" Huxtable did a great job keeping back stop and with the excellent tactic of name-calling managed to put many of the young girls off their game.  With Chris Clarke finally catching a junior out at the third attempt, and Zoe Dawson learning how to throw (even like a girl), the Seniors gained the upper hand to win by a narrow margin once again, 6 to 4½.

A great night was had by all and a wonderful celebration barbeque was served afterwards.  Thanks must go to all who helped out to make this an excellent evening, especially Dave Brown, the BBQ chefs, and the judges (who performed well under pressure).

    Cross Country Season

Winter is approaching and the Cross Country season is about to start.

For those not going on the Reims trip there is a one off warm up cross country race at Ampthill on the 17th of October.  Lower age limit is 14 years.

We are once again entering the The Apex Sports Chiltern League (Saturdays), Three Counties Cross Country League (Sunday s) and the North West London Young Athletes League (Saturday s, for U17s).  Three of the Three Counties races will have a Junior race in addition to the seniors race.  If you wish to enter one or more of the leagues please complete a registration form and return it with the league entrance fee to Neil Gregory, 7 Poppy Field, Bigglswade, Beds. SG18 8TU or to another committee member.

Once winter sets in you are likely to require cross country spikes or studs.  Biggleswade A C club colours must be worn when competing in any of these leagues.

If you have never tried it before have a go, it is fun, a good team event and good for your running.

This is the first time that Biggleswade AC has ever achieved this position and competed in the top 6 league plate final.  Over the season every club has 5 matches and league and match points awarded, on their results with the top 6 competing for the plate trophy.  Congratulations to all our athletes that competed over the season, and a bigger thanks for those that did very well in the plate final.  Most of our athletes are at the bottom of the age groups so will be competing in the same age groups next year, so better results could be expected.  Again many congratulations to you all.!!!

    Eastern Counties Pentathlon  St Ives
A small but perfectly formed quartet of Biggleswade juniors took part in this event.  Each competitor had to compete in hurdles, high jump, long jump, discus and 800m.  Nobody is an expert at all these different events which makes for an interesting competition.  Our four of Aileen Russell, Nick Gilbert, Ben Walton Smith and William Baldwin are all really middle distance runners but they showed some aptitude for some of the other events.  All survived the hurdles with Ben and Nick recording the same time despite being in different heats.  Next was the shot.  Aileen got her second PB in successive events and Ben took a narrow lead (with 239 points for 5.83m) over the other two boys.  Ben increased his lead by long jumping 4.24m giving him an 89 point advantage over Nick and 200 points over William.  In the high jump, Aileen recorded her 4th consecutive PB with 0.94m

William was pleased with a PB of 1.13m.  Again, Nick and Ben tied at 1.22m for 200points each.  Nick's technique was perfect and the high jump coach would like to take the credit for it.  Unfortunately he had only spent less than half an hour with him and 95% of it came from watching Hestre Cloete on the television ! Even jumping 1.22m only made him as tall as some of the other competitors.  Nick had been looking forward to the 800m to show some of the relative giants that you do not have to be big to run extremely fast.  Unfortunately, his last two attempts at 1.25m damaged his knee ligaments and he was unable to take part in the 800m.  He did walk over the start line and immediately retired to preserve his score.  Unfortunately Ben was not even able to do that and hence was not recorded as completing the event.  William was left to run it on his own and showed he still has good stamina (even if he never trains) and finished with a creditable 2min 53sec.

Half an hour earlier, Aileen had lined up knowing anything under 2min 54.6secs would give her 5 PB's out of 5, so no pressure.  Aileen has run a lot of 800's this year and none of them after 4 other events so this would not be easy.  A strong first lap and a storming finish brought her home a whole 3/10ths of a second inside her best.  Five out of five.  Job done !

We might not have won any medals but all four had a lot of fun and the spectators enjoyed it too.
