Club Championship Races

Don't forget that the Swineshead 10 Mile and the Standalone 10Km are our Club Championship Races so get your entries in soon.   Neil Gregory has the forms. There are Fun Runs for juniors at both events, and the Swineshead is followed by a barbecue and licenced bar

Navigators Way Training Run
Tuesday 17 Sep, 7pm

Following on from our August training run on the Greensand Ridge at Everton, we head back to the Navigators Way in September.   Meet on the River Bridge in Shefford.   As per normal, "drinks" will be available after the run in the Brewery Tap.

AAA of England - Road Relay Championships
Sutton Park (Birmingham), Sat/Sun 26/27 Oct

Please advise Stuart Galloway or Neil Gregory by Monday 7th October at the latest, if you are interested in running either of these events.   Hopefully, we will be able to get a team together.

Sun 27 Oct

  • U13 Girls (3 x 2.3 Km): 11.15 am
  • U13 Boys (3 x 2.3 Km): 12.00 Noon
  • U15 Girls (3 x 2.3 Km): 12.45 pm
  • U15 Boys (3 x 3.9 Km): 1.15 pm

Up to three teams can be entered for each event.   Please advise Ken Prior or David Brown by Monday 7th October at the latest if you are interested in running in one of the events.

Increasing problems in Sutton Park have required an increase in the number of Marshals that have to be deployed.   We are asked to provide 5 Marshals on both of the days - in return the Club would receive £100 (£200 if we cover both days).   If you are interested in acting as a Marshal, please advise any Committee member or Coach.

If we can get teams together for any of these races we will advise on transport arrangements later.

Car Security at Stratton

A vehicle was recently broken into in the Stratton School car park, with the intention of stealing the car radio, so please ensure that your car is locked securely when you visit Stratton on club training nights, and do not leave any valuables in your car.

Lauren Ambrose at the All England Schools' Championships

Lauren represented Bedfordshire in the Junior Girls High Jump.   Lauren was on the podium in 5th place having jumped 1.58 M just below her best at the time.   Lauren represents Bedfordshire again on the 25th August at Hendon in the South of England Inter Counties Championships, where she will be joined by Adam Dilley (U15 Boys 100 M, 200 M. and Relay).
Here is Lauren's account of the weekend:

I went to the English schools on the 11th,12th and 13th July.   I was really excited but I was really nervous at the same time because I didn't know that many people.

The qualifying height for the high jump was 1.55 and the national was 1.61.

We left Hastingbury school at 11am by coach, and got there about half past one.   We all got our room keys and then went straight to dinner.   We had a curfew every night to be in at half past ten.

The next day we had to get up at 6:15 so we could leave at 8.   We had lots of races that day and by about half past 5 we were ready to go.   That night every one was outside in the complex playing about.

The next day was the best because we had to do a parade; there were lots of people, and nearly every club had its own cheer so we were standing there doing our one cheer which was (I'm the worlds greatest) by R Kelly.   Just before it finished some one was singing the national anthem, and then after that it was back to more races, soon it was over and it was time to go home.

We got home at about 9pm, the first stop was at Bedford and it [the coach] went to two other places.

It was the best thing ever I have been to in my life, it was so cool and I loved every minute of it because I met loads of new friends.

What we did in August...

London Marathon

Next year's London Marathon is on Sunday 13th April 2003.   Don't forget to let us know if your entry to the London Marathon is rejected and you wish to be considered for a Club place.   We are usually lucky enough to receive two guaranteed places.

Looking after yourself...

Nutrition - Bread, Cereals and Potatoes
Generally a very tasty and satisfying source of carbohydrate, rich in calcium, iron and B Vitamins - these include breakfast cereals (preferably low in sodium and low in refined sugars), pasta, rice, oats, noodles, maize, millet, and cornmeal.   Try and eat wholemeal, wholegrain, brown or high fibre versions where possible.   Avoid frying potatoes (or bread!!), and don't eat too much butter or cheese/cream sauces as additives.
Why not try and make up your own muesli, then you know it will be low in sodium and sugar.   Use rolled oats, dried fruit combinations (eg. apricots, dates, raisins) and a variety of seeds/nuts (sunflower seeds, Brazil nuts, pumpkin seeds etc.)

Speed
It is important to remember that the improvement of running speed is a complex process which is controlled by the brain and nervous system.   In order for a runner to move more quickly, the leg muscles, of course, have to contract more quickly, but the brain and nervous system also have to learn to control these faster movements efficiently.   If you maintain some form of speed training throughout the year, your muscles and nervous system do not loose the feel of moving fast and the brain will not have to re-learn the proper control patterns at a later date.   In the training week speed work should be carried out after a period of rest or light training.   During your training session, do your speed work after the warm up, any other training should be of low intensity.

Dorset Doddle - 32 Miles   18 August
Five club members took part in this gruelling 32 mile event along the "undulating" coastal path from Weymouth to Swanage.   Unfortunately the hot and humid weather got the better of Gavin who had to retire after 24 miles suffering from severe dehydration.   He was later found sitting outside the Scott Arms PH waiting for a lift back to the finish and looking much better!   Roger came home fifth in an excellent time, while Jan, Stuart and Nigel finished together, knocking 30 minutes off their previous year's time.   About 200 runners and walkers took part.
Roger Wadeley   5 hrs 30 mins   5th overall
Jan Forrester   7 hrs 3 mins
Stuart Galloway   7 hrs 3 mins
Nigel Bush   7 hrs 3 mins
