    Clubmark Scheme

Well, we are very pleased to announce that the Club has been awarded Clubmark accreditation.  We are the first athletic club in the whole of the UK who has achieved this accolade.  Congratulations to all concerned - we have demonstrated that the Club is able to offer young athletes a safe, effective and child friendly environment in which to train, along with a high level of coaching competence - and all this without a local track that we can call our own.

A major presentation ceremony is being planned at Bedford on 14th September at which senior members of England Athletics, Sport England, Beds AAA, and county and district councillors will be present.  In addition, the Lord Coe ('Seb') has also been invited.  Biggleswade AC are the Guest of Honour.  This is a major landmark in the history of the Club since its inception in 1952.  We are going from strength to strength and many thanks to you the members for supporting us.

Looking after yourself - Endurance Training

Given that high levels of lactate/hydrogen ions will be detrimental to performance, one of the key reasons for endurance training is to enable the body to perform at a greater pace with a minimal amount of lactate.  This can be done by long steady runs, which will develop the aerobic capacity by means of capilliarisation (formation of more small blood vessels, thus enhancing oxygen transport to the muscles) and by creating greater efficiency in the heart and lungs.

If the aerobic capacity is greater, it means there will be more oxygen available to the working muscles and this should delay the onset of lactic acid at a given work intensity.  (Lactic acid is the cause of "Hitting the Wall" in a long distance race).  Lactic acid starts to accumulate in the muscles once you start operating above your anaerobic threshold which is normally somewhere between 85% and 90% of your maximum heart rate.

If you want to know more about how to establish your maximum heart rate safely then ask one of the coaches or senior members of the club.  However the moral of this tale is that those longer STEADY (more enjoyable?) runs are just as important in your overall training as the Fartlek and middle distance faster sessions.

Dorset Doddle Sunday 17th August 2003

Trust our guys to run in a race that has been cancelled!

This year's event was cancelled at the last minute owing to the age of the organiser (89 yrs!) and a lack of marshals.  But the Biggleswade quartet decided to have a fun weekend in Dorset anyway and run the course.  Saturday was spent "staching" water at strategic points on the course.  On Sunday, because of the strong easterly breeze, the decision was taken to run from Swanage to Weymouth - the opposite way to normal.  Three finished the course after a thoroughly enjoyable, but hard, romp over the roller coaster coastal path.

    SEAA Inter-Counties Championships , Abingdon 24th August
Biggleswade AC had 7 athletes selected to compete for Bedfordshire in this prestige event (from this event a South of England team will be selected).  The event was against the other 19 counties in the south from Cornwall to Kent to Norfolk.  There is only one athlete per county per event.
In the U20 women's category, Biggleswade AC members were half of the team, Lauren Ambrose (High Jump) and Rachel Baust (400 M) both competing above their age group as they are U17's.
In the U15 girls age group Biggleswade AC had 3 from the 7 girls attending - Kay Brown (75 M Hurdles), Sammy Freeman (Javelin) and Frankie Birch (Shot).  This is a true reflection of how far we as a club have moved forward in the past few years having more athletes every year taking County honours and competing at the highest level.
    WELL DONE TO ALL ATHLETES.

    AAA Championships  Sheffield 16/17 August
At these junior U15/U17 Championships, Biggleswade AC had 3 athletes take part.  In the U17 women's 300 m Rachel Baust was in the same heat as the favourites for the title, and despite a good run could only manage 6th (44.5 secs) and did not proceed into the semi final later that day with the final on Sunday.
On the Sunday Lauren Ambrose competed in the U17 women's High Jump.  Lauren was credited with 4th with 1.65 M with the winner jumping 1.71 M, but on count back Lauren was placed 6th as she had more failures than the athletes above her.
Also on Sunday Kay Brown competed over 75 M hurdles, Kay was in the 2nd heat, with 2 from each heat going forward to the final, and the 2 fastest losers.  This was Kay's first outdoor AAA's Championships.  As the race proceeded Kay was in 3rd place, but made the mistake of looking over her shoulder, and lost some momentum and finished in 7th (12.28 secs) but was 8/100th outside her PB.

Midweek Open , Bury St Edmunds, August 12th
