Formal Opening of Track and Fitness Suite
Sandy Upper School: 22nd September 2005

We are now using the track for training purposes, and (even without the lines) it is a nice feeling that we can now train properly!

The School are holding their opening event on 22nd September (which just happens to be the start of the countdown to the 2012 Olympics - there are 2500 days to go).

Among the sporting dignitaries invited and confirmed is Lizzie Yelling - Lizzie is a local girl and teacher, a team member with Paula Radcliffe, within club and County, and Internationally.  Lizzie competed in the Athens Olympics in the marathon and was the first female finisher for Britain.  Lizzie is younger than Paula and in their early competition days Lizzie was the number 1 with Paula coming in behind.

On 1st October, Biggleswade AC hope to hold a local athletics event with Luton AC at Sandy - details to follow, contact a coach for more information.

    BE SAFE, BE SEEN

A reminder from Gavin to all runners, as the nights draw in: please wear flourecent bibs or reflective clothing so you can easily be spotted by other road users on club nights (or whenever else you run in twilight or darkness).  They are not very restrictive and could save your life, and can be purchased cheaply at all good running shops.

"Don't be daft in the dark, be bright and light"

Your editor can tell you from personal experience as a driver how difficult it can be to see somebody in time, even under street lights - you are less visible than you think.

Three Peaks Fell Race - April 2006

Now that a few more club members have experienced the delights of Fell Running, it has been suggested that we run the Three Peaks Fell race in North Yorkshire next year.  This is a classic 24 mile event that starts and finishes in Horton-in-Ribblesdale, and goes over the three peaks of Pen-Y-Gent, Whernside and Ingleborough.  It's a beauty!

Entries are accepted from 1st January, and it is normally over-subscribed. But there is one small catch - you must have completed at least two "B" class Fell Races in the last 3 years to qualify.  A "B" class fell race is typically about 6 or 8 miles long and climbs about 1000-1300 feet.  For those that did Cracken Edge recently in Derbyshire, you have already got one in the bag, as it is a "B" Fell race.

If you are interested in running the Three Peaks Race next year, please add your name to the Forum on our web site or let Nigel know.  A list of the qualifying "B" class fell races will be added to the forum, from which you will need to choose and run two, to achieve qualification.

    Foster Review Developments

The Fell Runners Association is known to be likely to break away and run its own branch of the sport if England Athletics comes into being.  There is also still a lot of concerns that money being made available for the "regeneration" of our sport is not reaching one of the most important areas - Coaching.

As an indicator of what we might have to pay for any future Membership Scheme in England, the Membership Scheme in Scotland (previously free) is now £15 from the individual and £7 from the club, per annum.

    The Tuesday Night Programme

6th Sep    Away Day - Copton Way - Lead by Nigel
Start time is 7pm sharp as the nights are drawing in.
The run starts from the church in Cockayne Hatley.  Please park on the verge of the private road outside the church.  The run is mostly over footpaths via Hatley St George, and back along the Clopton Way, the distance is 6 miles, and there is an alternative shorter route of 3.5 miles.  A beer/orange in The Old Coach House PH in Potton Market Square will follow the run.

Jorden Best competed in the U15 Boys age group in the High Jump and 80 m Hurdles, Jorden jumped 1.65 m for the high jump and 12.44 secs for 4th in his heat of the 80 m Hurdles. Both events were held on Sunday 14th
Craig Morse competed in the U17 mens Long Jump and Triple Jump.  On the Saturday 13th weather conditions could only be described as horrific with very severe rain storms (aka Helsinki), and the triple jump continued performances were down totally, Craig finished 14th in the triple jump and on Sunday finished 12in the Long Jump (Craig's training partner Huntingdon's Andrew Bullymore won, beating the members of the British Team!!).
Also competing was Matt Turnbull , the last event under the Biggleswade name (Matt is now a member of Bedford & Cnty), Matt was 8th in the Shot Putt and 15th in the Discus.

    Dorset Doddle  21 August
Three Biggleswade AC runners took part in this year's event, following the coastal path from Weymouth to Swanage, a distance of 31 miles.  The total ascent is 8800 feet, and so it is equivalent to going up and down Ben Nevis TWICE, while running 5 miles further than a Marathon!
Our three runners, Chris Clarke, Jan Forrester, andNigel Bush, decided to run together to avoid going off course.  Unfortunately the plan didn't work, and they managed to choose the wrong route while crossing the Lulworth Firing Ranges - not to be recommended when there are unexploded shells about!  Despite their detour they still managed to finish the event, on a very hot day, in 7hrs 30mins, and Jan was the first LADY to finish.

SEAA Inter Counties  Abingdon 28th August.
Jorden Best represented Bedfordshire against the other 18 counties in the South of England; in the U15 Boys 80 m Hurdles, in his heat Jorden finished 2nd in a new club record of 11.92 secs, (wind assisted 2.9 m/s) and in the final was 4th with 12.06 secs.  Also competing was Sammy Freeman in the U20 womens javelin (Sammy is an U17 but is the best in the County at U17 and U20 - the weight of the the javelin does not change for this age group), Sammy came 12th with a seasons best throw.

    Eastern Counties Championships  Ipswich
