SANDY 10 mile race

Welcome to the Sandy 10

February  2021

An email has been sent to every entrant for the 2021 race (i.e. those that deferred their entry from the 2020 race) containing the following information.

Dear Sandy 10 entrant,

For reasons that I’m sure by now are clear, there will be no Sandy 10 road race in 2021.

At the bottom of this email is information on deferring to our next race or requesting a refund (or even taking your refund in the form of race shirts!) – please read that in full and take action by Sunday 11 April.

The (non-)race

The race committee has voted unanimously to arrive at this decision, which I appreciate may come as a disappointment to some, but the reality of the ongoing pandemic is inescapable – the committee has been unable to meet in-person for almost 11 months, and the prospect of being able to safely assemble a field of up to 600 runners remains a semi-distant one.

We have explored a host of alternative options but none were viable given our facilities, course and marshalling capacity. Moreover, we feel it's simply not responsible to proceed with attempting to put on such an event right now.

All entry fees are safe and secure, and later this year we plan to meet to discuss the prospects for returning in 2022. Before we return, however, the committee have agreed that the following tests must be met with flying colours:

Six criteria to pass prior to the Sandy 10 returning

1) No lockdown restrictions being in place, or looking imminent

2) Entire race committee being able to meet and make full preparations face-to-face

3) All entrants having had the opportunity to be vaccinated against Covid-19

4) All officials and marshals having had the opportunity to be vaccinated against Covid-19

5) General public health situation being significantly improved

6) Confidence of the local community in large crowds assembling

When we return, our entry fees will be a little higher (this was actually planned pre-pandemic for this year!), so if you are interested in being in our next race, we wholeheartedly recommend that you defer to avoid extra expense further down the line.

Please note, to be clear: EVERYONE deferring will have the option of a full refund when we either announce a date for 2022 or come to the decision that we’re having to wait a little longer. Deferring now keeps all options open further down the line.

We are aware of other races where entrants have ended up having money disappear down a black hole during the pandemic, and organisers failing to respond to emails etc. Rest assured: we won't be doing that.

We're not about profit, and never will be. All we aim to do is to attract people to SG19, give them a great, safe race, and after all our costs are covered we're able to give generously to charity. When we're able to do that with absolute confidence, we'll be back!

So, it’s that time again: defer, refund or … 2x T-shirts?

a) If you wish to DEFER

… Simply reply from the email account you received this email from

… and type DEFER in the subject line or message.

You will receive confirmation in due course that you remain in the field for our next race – we’ll send an update later in the year on how things are looking for 2022.

b) If you wish to receive a full REFUND

… You have TWO options – Paypal or direct bank transfer.

For Paypal

1) Please reply stating you wish to receive a refund

2) Include your full name

3) Also include your Paypal email address

For bank transfer

1) Please reply stating you wish to receive a refund

We also need ALL of the following (please read carefully to avoid delays) …

2) Full name that matches your bank account

3) State whether it is a personal or business account

4) Name of bank

5) Bank account number

6) Bank sort code

Once all refunds have been issued (and please bear with us as it is an arduous manual process), confirmation emails will be sent out and all email correspondence including any bank account details will be deleted.

c) If you would like to withdraw from the race

and receive TWO 2020 technical T-SHIRTS instead of a refund …

1) Simply reply with SHIRT somewhere in subject or message body

2) The size/s (S M L XL) and fit/s (Unisex/men's or women's) required

3) Your mailing address! No postage fee required.

Absolute deadline for all requests from entrants is Sunday 11 April 2021.

Stragglers will be chased nearer the time, but anyone we don’t hear from by the deadline will have their race fees donated to Sue Ryder St John’s in Moggerhanger.

FINALLY … and about those T-shirts!

Any more takers for 2020 race shirts?

It’s the race that never happened, with the year nobody wants to remember in massive type on a blue background! We still have plenty in stock.

They’re great quality and we’ve sold loads, but there’s still have some way to go before we recoup the cost incurred, and unless we can successfully do that we may have to rethink souvenir race shirts at future races.

PRICE £5 each +P&P, unisex or women’s fit, S M L and XL all available.

Do please email if interested!
