Biggleswade AC offers much more in addition to its evening weekday training sessions. Over the festive period members had the opportunity to take part in a number of fun, social events - a great way to loosen the legs and get in the party spirit! Here’s just a small selection of what went on…
No, you weren’t seeing things, it was just Biggleswade AC members donning fairy wings, tutus, and colourful wigs to take part in the Club’s annual Fairy Run at the RSPB Reserve (held on Saturday 23rd December)! The Fairy Run is conducted as a handicap race with members setting off at various intervals aiming to finish around the same time. Many congratulations to Jennie Day and Jemma Day who were first to cross the line. Following the race, the Fairies assembled in the Sir William Peel pub in Sandy for drinks and nibbles as well as awaiting the result of another key element - the presentation of the Best Dressed Fairy Award. Voted for by all competing Fairies on the day, this year’s Award was deservedly won by Charlie Arnold who wore a rather fetching pink number.
To run off the Christmas Day excesses members met up for a Boxing Day amble around Potton. In similar fashion to BAC’s infamous Coffee and Cake runs, a variety of routes were on offer both on road and off road as well as a post-Christmas catchup over coffee in the Coach House in Potton afterwards.
On Thursday 28th a group of intrepid BAC’ers took on the Kingfisher Way, a 20+ mile waymarked route following the River Ivel. This is a firm fixture in the calendar where Winter and Summer versions are held every year. Starting at Baldock the group made their way cross country via Langford, Biggleswade, Sandy and Blunham so anyone who didn’t feel up to doing the full 20 miles could join at those points too. Once reaching the end at Tempsford, runners and support crew gathered for a much-welcomed coffee and mince pie.
Activities continued with a festive Pub Run on Saturday 30th. Despite the rain, members gathered together in Sandy for this 10+ mile run, calling at pubs in Northill, Old Warden and Broom before finishing in Biggleswade. Thank you to the pubs for welcoming our rather soggy runners and allowing them to dry off over a pint.
Sundays are when BAC’s Coffee and Cake runs take place and New Years Eve was no exception. C&C runs offer members a chance to get in some miles at the weekend with a range of alternating destinations in and around the local area, and a selection of distances and paces on offer. It was the turn of Biggleswade for the NYE run followed by coffee and cake in a nearby café (as the run name suggests!)
Biggleswade Athletics Club is a local community, not-for-profit sports organisation providing track and field and running to both Juniors and Seniors.
