Freddie becomes our third SAL ‘athlete of the match’ this season!

BAC’s Freddie Steele was named joint ‘Man of the Match’ at this season’s second Southern Athletics League (SAL) Division 3 East meeting held in Colchester on Sunday June 22 – the third club member to win an ‘athlete of the match’ award over the last two league matches.

Freddie, part of the now all-BAC Biggleswade team in that competition, secured 802 points*, having finished 2nd in the men’s 100m with the same time (10.9) as the winner and other joint Man of the Match. He also finished 2nd in the 200m. His success followed that of BAC club mates Alex Ingham and Hannah Brunning who were Man of the Match and Woman of the Match, respectively, at the previous SAL meeting in May.

Other BAC highlights at the Colchester match included four ‘A’ event wins and several new PBs (all PBs subject to confirmation when the full results are published shortly on Power of 10):

Donncha Blake won the men’s A high jump with a new PB of 1.90m and the A pole vault. He also set a new PB of 5.73m in the long jump.

Ryan Kennerley won the men’s A 110m hurdles.

Leonie Brunning won the women’s A high jump.

Darren Janssen set new PBs in the men’s 2000m steeplechase (8:45.3 some 26 seconds faster than his previous PB!); and hammer (19.8m).

U-17M athlete Sidney Hammond set a new PB of 2:07.5 in the men’s 800m on his debut appearance in the SAL.

George Hardy set a new PB in the men’s 200m (23.9).

It is also worth highlighting the fact that nearly all the BAC athletes multi-evented, headed by Leonie and Darren (seven individual events each); Hannah Brunning (six); Donncha and Ryan (four each); Sid and George (three).

Overall, Biggleswade finished 5th of the eight teams in their division with a total of 263 points, 46 more than they achieved at the previous SAL meeting and only seven points short of 4th place – a superb achievement for a team of only 12 athletes! The other teams in that league are COBRA (combined Colchester Harriers and Braintree), Bedford, West Norfolk, West Suffolk, Ryston, Southend and Huntingdonshire.

Biggleswade Team: Donncha Blake, Oran Blake, Hannah Brunning, Leonie Brunning, Sidney Hammond, George Hardy, Darren Janssen, Ryan Kennerley, Henry Knox, Freddie Steele, Arlo Treece, Fenya Treece.
