Great BAC team and individual performances at latest SAL meeting
BAC’s 15-strong team for this season’s third Southern Athletics League (SAL) Division 3 East match in Colchester on Sunday July 13 produced a great combined effort to finish fourth (of eight teams) on the day with 267 points, the club’s highest position of this season to date.
There were also some fine individual performances – notably Alex Ingham winning his second ‘Man of the Match’ award of the season; three new club records; eight A event wins, including Freddie Steele achieving a men’s 100m/200m double; and two events where club athletes won both the A and B competitions to claim the maximum 16 points available.
Alex was named ‘Man of the Match’ for his performance in the men’s javelin where he won the A event – and set a new club senior men’s record in the process – with a throw of 59.93m to score 855 points*. He previously won the same award at the first SAL meeting in May with 833 points.
The two other new club records set at the Colchester meeting were both achieved by Logan Gamble on her debut SAL appearance for BAC − in the women’s V-35 category for the 100m (14.7 secs) and the 200m (30.7 secs).
BAC’s eight A event winners at Colchester were:
● Leonie Brunning, women’s high jump, shot put and hammer (with Hannah Brunning winning the B hammer).
● Freddie Steele, men’s 100m and 200m.
● Alex Ingham, men’s javelin (with Arlo Treece winning the B javelin).
● Ryan Kennerley, men’s 110mH.
● Donncha Blake, men’s high jump.
Other notable BAC performances included:
● Leonie and Alex each competing in five events; Orlagh Brunning in four; and Donncha and Hannah in three, to help boost the team score.
● David Brown stepping in to run the men’s A 400m in a time of 73.3 secs, only just over a second outside his own V-65 club record for that distance.
● Henry Knox, an U-17 junior, coming 2nd in the men’s A 800m, his best SAL A event finishing position to date.
● Team newcomer Steve Edmunds, an M V-65 athlete, notching PBs in the shot put (7.26m) and hammer (14.09m) as a non-scorer in both events.
● The club being able to field teams in both the men’s and women’s 4 x 100m relays, finishing fourth in both to add another 10 points to the total.
