The ever-popular Bedford Harriers’ Doug Anderson 5k was a sell out last Wednesday evening, undoubtedly due to this being the Bedfordshire Amateur Athletic Association County Championships for those from or living in the county. It was also Biggleswade Athletic Club’s designated 5k championship race for which trophies are awarded for the best male and female age graded performance, meaning a strong blue and yellow contingent present on the night too. Over 400 runners lined up for a prompt 7:30pm start ready to take on the 2 ½ lap course of Bedford Park. Conditions were somewhat humid but better than in previous years’ where torrential downpours or blistering heat had been experienced. The bustle of the start eased well within 1k as runners settled into their pace and made their way round to completing the first lap. Into the next, the field opened up as the runners navigated the narrow park path as well as tackling the rather deceptive incline second time round. The final push to the finish saw strong performances all round for BAC including a number of PBs achieved - Nicholas Sinclair with 17:41 and Tom Pinney 18:15.
With the provisional results in, BAC scored some noteworthy placings including the Female Team prize for Emily Varley, Rosanna Bartlett and Nicky Upperton. Emily also achieved 3rd place in the female open category with her time of 18:57 and Rosanna 2nd place in female V35 category running 20:22.
