Title doubles, records, medals and PBs at county athletics championships

BAC athletes completed two notable county title doubles, set four new club records, won 15 gold medals and achieved over a dozen PBs across three different county athletics championships over the weekend of May 10/11.

Most of the BAC action was at the Bedfordshire AAA 2025 County Track & Field Championships, which as usual were combined with those of the Hertfordshire AAA, held over two warm sunny days at the Bedford International Athletic Stadium.

The first of many BAC performance highlights there saw two of our U-17 athletes, middle distance runner Henry Knox and sprinter Sureyya Akay, both complete championship doubles by adding full Bedfordshire county titles to the Bedfordshire schools county titles they won in the same events (800m and 300m, respectively) last year. Henry achieved that by winning the U-17M 800m, holding off a strong challenge from club mate Sidney Hammond who finished second. Sureyya achieved the same titles double in the U-17W 300m, overcoming a hamstring niggle to do so.

BAC highlight number two at the Bedfordshire championships was the setting of three new club records (subject to confirmation), all in field events. They were achieved by:

Leonie Brunning, SW hammer, 45.67m

Donncha Blake, U-20M pole vault, 4.40m

Oran Blake, U-17M hammer, 40.50m

A fourth new club record was set by Nathania Lewis who broke her own record for the U-13G 100m with a time of 13.3 secs in a heat at the Cambridgeshire AA County Championships where she also won a hat-trick of gold medals!

Overall, BAC athletes won 12 gold medals at the Bedfordshire championships, with a number also achieving PBs (all PBs subject to confirmation). They were:

Leonie Brunning, SW hammer and SW discus

Oran Blake, U-17M hammer and U-17M high jump

● Freddie Steele, U-20m 100m

● Sureyya Akay, U-17W 300m

● Henry Knox, U-17M 800m

Orlagh Brunning, U-20W discus

● Ésa Blake, U-17W hammer PB of 20.46m

● Ross Bone, U-13B javelin

● Bradley Cant, U-15B javelin – PB of 35.00m

Donncha Blake, U-20M pole vault

Other medals were won by:

Ésa Blake, silver, U-17W discus – PB of 17.24m; silver U-17W javelin

Hannah Brunning, silver SW discus; bronze SW hammer

● Freddie Steele, silver, U-20m 200m

Sidney Hammond, silver, U-17M 800m – PB of 2:09.21

● Ross Bone, silver, U-13B 800m – PB of 2:33.24

● Lauren Bone, silver, U-15G 800m – PB of 2:31.44

● Donncha Blake, silver, U-20M high jump

● Fenya Treece, silver, U-17W long jump

● Ayla Akay, bronze, U-13G 200m – PB of 30.31

One of BAC’s other athletes, George Hardy, opted to enter the Hertfordshire championships, which he qualified for through living in that county, and won a silver medal in the U-20M 400m with a new PB of 51.64.

Two other BAC athletes, Nathania and Ariana Lewis, both competed in three events the U-13G 100m, 200m and long jump at the Cambridgeshire AA County Championships held in Peterborough on May 10. Nathania won gold in all three events and ran her 100m heat in 13.3 secs − a new PB, club record and county championship record. She was also just 3cm shy of breaking the county record in the long jump with a leap of 4.56m. Ariana made it to the finals of all three events, a fine achievement in her first season as an U-13. Although she did not medal she did run a PB of 14.5 secs in the 100m.
