Great performances at BAC’s opening QuadKids events
BAC’s youngest athletes kicked off this season’s QuadKids programme with some great performances during the opening two events at our Sandy track on the evenings of May 13 and 15.
QuadKids is a competition for U-11s encompassing four events − the 75m, 600m, long jump and vortex howler (throwing implement). It is designed to be a first step for young athletes in the world of competitive athletics.
The nine young athletes (eight boys and one girl) who took to track and field on the first evening in warm sunny weather were all participating in their first athletics event − and, in the words of Louise Cant, BAC’s coach for fundamentals who works with that group, “they smashed it!”.
“We are so proud of every single one of them. They all took part in all four events and did a fantastic job. They listened well and followed all the instructions from our lovely officials who came along to help run the event,” she said.
Performance highlights included:
● A super 600m run from Nathan Cornwall whose hard work in winter training has really paid off. His time of 1 min 59 secs was very close to a club record which has stood for a very long time. Next time Nathan!
● James Goodwin with an amazing all round display in sprint, run, jump and throws.
James initially joined for sports hall and has only been with us for a short time but has already impressed with his times and distances. “Great things to come, James, and we look forward to continuing with you on your athletics journey,” commented Louise.
● Meredith Holland-Morris with great performances in all four events. “Meredith, you did a fabulous job. A perfect long jumper in the making with a jump of 2.71m. Such an impressive landing with your feet perfectly together and lovely bent knees.”
Louise concluded: “Well done everyone and thank you to all the parents who helped to make the evening a success.”
A total of 13 children (nine boys and four girls) took part in the second QuadKids event, which took place two days later on a chillier evening with a bit of a breeze. The numbers were boosted by the presence of several young athletes who had taken part in previous QuadKids competitions, including Theia Freestone-Bull, Bethany Challis, Leo Spence, Jayden Fairbrother, Theo Gregg and Liam Fassenfelt. All of them improved in at least three of the four events and achieved some great news PBs.
“We were also super impressed with our newest members who have joined us from sports hall. They all had a great evening, putting in some great results in all four events,” commented Louise.
Performance highlights among those new members included Athena Kingsley producing an excellent sprint in what it was not only her first QuadKids event but also her first ever session at the track. Well done Athena, we are looking forward to seeing you again over the coming weeks. Leo, Theia and Rocco also produced some super sprint times, all clocking less than 12 seconds.
Louise added: “I would like to say a huge thank you to our officials for coming to support us. Carol, our chief timekeeper; Damer, our field official; and Terry, our starter. QuadKids is such a great opportunity for children to get a good experience of competition protocol in a friendly and controlled environment. I think they all had a good evening and worked really hard in all four events.”
Dates for the next two QuadKids competition evenings, due to be held in July, should be confirmed shortly.
